Because every underground legend gets signed by a big hyped up producer or rapper? How come Sage Francis, El-P, Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Dalek, Mr. Lif, etc. haven't been snagged up by Dr. Dre? Edited By The Sleeper on 1047350440 - HollywoodJewMoses - 03-11-2003 not trying to pick sides or anything, but 50cent was a mixtape legend, way before he signed with his first, or second label - LyricalGomez - 03-11-2003 Quote:Why? Because every underground legend gets signed by a big hyped up producer or rapper? No, but they all get signed, those who don't usually don't get signed by choice. Quote:How come Sage Francis, El-P, Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Dalek, Mr, Lif, etc. haven't been snagged up by Dr. Dre? Well for one, none of those would really mesh well with Dre's style, why do you think Dre spent something like 6-7 years before coming out with an act? He was waiting for the right one. And frankly anyone who thinks of Master P as their hero doesn't deserve a contract. - The Sleeper - 03-11-2003 I think Dre and Eminem should sign more rappers that sound like Tribe Called Quest, so at least all the hype will be justified. - LyricalGomez - 03-11-2003 Tribe Called Quest would not fit in at Shady records, their sounds are different. Shady Records should continue to do what they've been doing, sign people who not only have the talent but will fit in with their sound rather than sign just the hottest acts out there. - LyricalGomez - 03-11-2003 Quote:so at least all the hype will be justified. Are you saying the hype around 50 was not justified? Sure it went a little over the top but I don't think it was unwarranted, he was a legend in NYC, he's been working towards this for many years, he was trained by Jam Master Jay for christ's sake, what else does he have to do to justify the hype he recieved? - The Sleeper - 03-11-2003 Well I just think he's a boring rapper, at least when Snoop's 1st album sold a billion copies, it had some substance to it. - LyricalGomez - 03-11-2003 Gin and Juice is so much deeper than Many Men - HedCold - 03-11-2003 did he really have to spend 1/2 million to produce "in da club"? - The Sleeper - 03-11-2003 we got some freaks in the living room gettin it on and they ain't leavin til 6 in the mornin' Might not be the deepest lyric but I remember it 10 years later. I doubt I'll remember "wanksta" or "g-unit" 10 years from now. - LyricalGomez - 03-11-2003 Of course you won't remember the lyrics of someone you don't like, what point does that prove? - The Sleeper - 03-11-2003 I may not like a lot of artists, but I can respect their talent or impact on the music industry. I can't stand the Beatles but I respect them as rock innovators. I'm not into the Clash's music but I respect them as one of the founders of punk. I don't see 50 cent having much impact on hip hop, and I think he'll fade out pretty quickly. That is my point. - LyricalGomez - 03-11-2003 Exactly what major impact did Snoop have on Hip Hop? I like Snoop, but I would hardly call him someone who reshaped the face of Hip Hop. And like I said, we'll see, I think we'll be seeing 50 for quite some time, his next album is slated to come out later this year. - The Sleeper - 03-11-2003 He may not have been Run DMC, but whatever impact he has is greater than anything 50 cent will ever accomplish. Of course this is all just speculation and personal opinion now. I think I've filled my rap comment quota for at least the next year. - drusilla - 03-11-2003 you are comparing apples & oranges. but i think i'm with gomez on this one. - Keyser Soze - 03-11-2003 mainstream rap|-------50cent-----------------------------Sage Francis, El-P, Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Dalek-----|cutting edge rap i think both 50 and the still unhyped rappers that sleeper mentioned are equally hot, just different styles. all depends on what mood you're in.
