My advice, go out and listen to several different brands of speakers. Stick to a price range though, so you're not comparing apples to oranges. Buy the speakers that sound the best to you, not the speakers that someone tells you are the best. Are they going to listen to them, or are you?
With head units, it's best to stick to the major brands (Alpine, Sony, Kenwood, etc.). Again, stick to your price range and compare head units looking for the one that has the features you want and a look/feel that you can live with.
For installation, DO NOT go to circuit city or best buy. Those kids are butchers. You should look for a reputable shop that has competitive prices. Most Boomer McLoud stores are pretty good, if there's one near you (there probably is).
As to the comment about Bose being the best speakers... for home they just might be but I think a pair of Definitives would probably sound better than Bose. The thing about Bose car systems is that they are matched to the car. This typically means that they will sound better than aftermarket speakers that are made for any car, not a specific car.
A good stereo shop could set you up with the right equipment to make your car sound better than a Bose system and for a fraction of the cost. I'll equate it to paying $3000 for an Alienware computer when you could build your own at a similar spec for $1200.

when replacing the stock radio, it is important to do both the reciever & the speakers? it wouldn't do much to replace just one?

You can buy a head unit that pushes more wattage. In my case, I want a head unit that will allow me to play multiple sources of music. MiniDisc and CD changer, since my stock has no tape deck that i could use as an adapter for either.
