- Kid Afrika - 10-05-2003

So, I recently realized that my Apex DVD player wouldn't play recorded DVDs. It was pretty old, so that's no surprise. Anyway, I started looking for a new DVD player, and I cam across the DVD 726 from Philips. It said it played CD-Rs, MP3s, DVD-R/+R, etc., and it was only $60 so I figured... FUCK IT!!!!

I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I plays nearly everything, except DivX or AVI files. It even plays slideshows of JPEG files.

BONUS!!! - There's a multi-region hack for it, and it WORKS!

Get yours today. They won't last long.

EDIT - I nearly forgot to mention that it plays MPEG-1 files. No need to convert to VCD format. It just plays them.

That sounds pretty sweet.

would I find this in circuit city?

- Kid Afrika - 10-05-2003

I got it at Best Buy, here in Las Vegas.

It's not on their website though, so it may be a discontinued item.

i saw it for 79 on amazon

Yeah phillips makes very cheap DVD players, they are actually very good.

I can get you one at BB sleepy, I think its 70. It holds 5 discs.

Yeah GS, you missed the point... it was not that this was a cheap DVD player, but rather that this was a cheap DVD player that would play basically anything you donwload in MPG format.Or, for that matter, anything you download and convert to MPG format, or JPG format, or VCD, or S-VCD... from CD-R or DVD-/+R or whatever...

My point was to offer a DVD player for minimal investment that would play anything that you throw at it, not juts a cheap DVD player. Forgive me if the player you mentioned does the same, but my intent was to offer a player with a free and easy hack that would play everything.

I think he was talking about the same DVD player you were, and thanks for the offer Gonzo, but I think I'll shop around a bit before deciding.

Still happy with the player, Kid? I mentioned this to my dad and he wanted me to order one for him. Just wondering if you noticed any deficiencies in the time that you've had it.

- Kid Afrika - 11-14-2003

It's performing well beyond my expectations. The only limitations are...

No optical audio output.

However, it does have DTS (which some people prefer). Other than than the lack of an optical audio output, I have no complaints. Good luck finding one at the retail level. I think it's been discontinued. I would bet that some online stores still have it though.

Here's the bizrate link

Thanks. Your link is screwed up but I found it.

- Danked - 11-14-2003

This one is the same, no? Only with an optical output.

- Kid Afrika - 11-14-2003

Yeah, not sure what happened with my link.

Anyway, that one looks similar, but I can't guarantee that it has the same capabilities as far as being region-free and playing every type of disc imaginable. But hey, is your dad busy downloading movies and burning them? If not, I'm sure the one you found is fine. For the standard DVD features, the model I have is excellent. So, I don't see why the one you found would be any worse.
