Then, they will remember that the band did good covers of songs they like, and support them more when they come out with original material. Whenever I go to shows, and the opening band(s) is virtually unknown, everyone just stands there while they play original material. However, if they mixed in some songs that people are fimiliar with, it gets people more excited and they will remember the band better. Being a cover band your whole life won't get you very far, but I think its a good idea to start with it to try and gain a fanbase.
