$25MM for Clemens
$15MM for Abreu
$13MM for Posada
$11MM for Rivera
$10MM for Pavano
$6MM for Torre
Now, the Yanks are only paying $16MM a year for Arod, and if he opts out of his contract, they'll obviously be on the hook for a lot more than that.
plus after 2008, they get another ~$50MM off the books: Giambi ($22MM), Pettite ($16MM) and Mussina ($11MM)
Point is: I can see them spending a ridiculous amount on free agents the next couple years, but this offseason there really aren't many high upside free agents out there (Dunn would be a good addition, but Andruw Jones is on a serious decline, Carlos Zambrano is breaking down, etc)
- torre's 6 million does not count
- posada will be resigned, probably for just about the same amount of money
- rivera also will be resigned
dunn fits in because he has a lot of power, but is also a career 246 hitter with a tendency to strike out a lot. defensively he is a liability as a corner outfielder, they could possibly shift him over to first. bottom line he is not that great.
andrew jones is a 38 year old in a 30 year olds body, not to mention they would have to either move damon to a corner outfield spot, most likely left field since he doesnt have a good enough arm to play right field, and then move matsui to right field....whom is another defensive liability.
it's all just a huge disaster for that team.
