PLEASE READ:

I do volunteer work for the Red Cross, and I donate blood every three months (proud member of the gallon club.)

Here are the facts you need to know-

Yes, centers are turning away donors- they are overwhelmed by the amount of people giving blood. PLEASE- they will need blood in a week, two weeks, a month from now, and you can make an appointment (commitment) now to show up in a few weeks. They desperately need you to show up then, when the initial shock has settled and the amount of people donating lessens.

If you are concerned about passing out, here are some tips- keep extra hydrated (Gatorade,) keep your amino intake and blood sugar up (OJ, eggs) and make sure you eat some iron rich foods (green leafies, legumes, meats) a full day or two in advance and following your donation. Vitamins with minerals help also. I weigh 102 (they never hassle me about being underweight because I'm a problem free donor) and I never have had a problem following these methods. Also, plan on exercising before, not after, if you don't want to take a day off. If you pass out following these methods, you simply psyched yourself out- chill out- it's no biggie.

O, specifically O neg. is in crisis demand. If you have O neg. blood, make sure you let them know when you make your appointment- you have priority.

Finally- although normally you would wait 3 months between donations, it's not essential. If you have donated recently (I gave ten days ago) contact your doctor and ask if it's ok to donate again- I got a clear go ahead, and again, I'm under the standard donation weight to give in the first place.

You can do this- It's really all you can do right now. I hope that this is not a one time shot for many of you- blood is always needed, but if it is, now, or in a couple of weeks, is the time to do it.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to read this.

They say that the best bet for anyone is to call in advance. I went to JFK Medical Center in Edison yesterday. They said they were running it from 9-9. I got there at 12 and was given a number
they said then the wait was over 2 hrs. I ended up going back 3x during the course of the day. Even with a system to try and handle the # of people they expected , they still couldn't! They started taking phone #'s to contact people and make individual appointments. Alot of people left after making one. I ended up getting in because of this and didn't get out of there until after 11pm and they still had at least 30-40 people waiting whose paper work/lab work was processed. So as Raven said:
quote:

Be ready to wait -- the wait is 6 to 8 hours to give blood

Most of the drives, even at hospitals, are being run by volunteers! Try to be patient.

Skydiver brings up a great point, if you can't give blood for whatever reason, volunteer for whatever they need, hell make sandwiches and bring them down there. Anything you can do will be a great help.

If you're unable to give blood, check out my sig for links to other ways to help.

The tremendous outpouring of people looking to do something just goes to show how strong we will rise again.

At this point giving blood is all most of us can do. So if you can find the time just do it.

Just a reminder to keep trying to give blood next week. Don't stop trying and if they tell you they are not taking any moe donors there then ask if you can help in another way. My friend in VA is working for the 5th day straight. The hospital she works at is pulling 12 hour shifts and is expecting to recive a ton of paitents starting next week.

Just out of curiousity, should a recreational drug user (and I'm NOT taking about IV drugs) refrain from giving blood? Could they do more harm than good?

I can't complain but sometimes I still do. Life's been good to me so far . . .

I would say that it depends on the drugs. You might be better off stoping all drugs for about a month before giving

My brother asked one of the nurses taking blood about this. The OFFICIAL word is no drinking booze or smoking up (weed) at least 24 hours before giving blood.

Just to reitterate what Shiloh said, if you haven't given blood yet, the need for it is going to increase again in the upcoming weeks and months. So please, donate, as soon as possible, and if you already have, do it again in 3 months. Its the least we can do.

They were just talking about donating blood on CNN. They were saying that the blood banks are happy from the turn out but hope these people will come back in a month or 2 because they will need it in the future also. They said that they can only keep the blood for 35 days and then it is dumped.

God Bless The USA.

Yeah you do have to wait. I'm not 100% certain but I believe it's 1 year after. I'm sure you can call any blood bank and they'll tell you exactly how long.

you still can, but it's not a good idea for your own sake. You're more susceptible to getting a cold after giving, even if you feel fine beforehand.

As far as drug use/drinking- yeah, it's ok, although it's better if you can sett aside 24-48 hours of clean living. This is more for your sake than that of the blood. If you become faint while giving blood and they have to pull your needle before you finish you've wasted your time, their time, and your blood.

If you're getting a cold, wait a week. You won't pass on your germs, but you may have to bail before your pint is up.

Also, check with the Red Cross if you've spent more than 6 months in Europe within the past 6 years- mad cow and all. This excludes some countries, so check if you are unsure. Please show up in about 3 weeks and thanks!
