Why don't they put Howard and O&A on the same station? Either Krock or WNEW would be killing in New York if they did. The rest of the day on KROCK sucks right after Howard gets off the air and WNEW is a complete wasteland from 11pm-3pm. Nothing against the Sports Guys, I just don't find them entertaining for more than a few minutes.

Froy, I know what you said about ratings threads, but this is defintely a positive one and they were crowing like school girls about Boston so I thought it would be ok to post this. It appeared in a Boston newspaper.

See Slash, I could put my own opinion.

WBZ's resurgence after Sept. 11 makes waves in the ratings
Boston Radio/by Dean Johnson

Friday, October 19, 2001

The summer ratings period (July-September) is the odd duck in radio's calendar year. School's out, people are on vacation, audience listening habits change radically, and younger listeners tune in more than at any other time.

And because the Hub's just-released summer ratings include a week of after Sept. 11, it isn't just a little different this year, it's Dennis Rodman weird.

For example, a rival programmer who broke down the numbers estimated that WBZ-AM (1030) and its all-news format earned a 24 share of the general listening audience the week after the Sept. 11 attacks. That's an astounding total, one that roughly breaks down to one out of every four people listening to WBZ.

It's no surprise, then, that WBZ was the top choice for the general (12-plus) audience and tied for second with the 25-54 audience. Other stations that enjoyed a hot summer include WJMN-FM (94.5), which won the race for listeners in the 18-34 group and classic rocker WZLX-FM (100.7), which tied WBZ for 25-54 listeners and showed impressive gains with other groups, especially the 18-34 crew.

But WBCN-FM (104.1) just might have had the best summer of all. Syndicated bad boys Opie and Anthony(NA because of Froy's edict) debuted their afternoon talk show on WBCN in early August, and their arrival coupled with Howard Stern's (13.1 up from 11.3) rebounding morning show gave WBCN sweet, sweet totals across the board.

The station moved from a springtime 11th place showing to fifth with the 12-plus crowd. It advanced from fourth to second in the 18-34 race and jumped from 10th to fifth with the 25-54 audience.

How much of that was sampling of the duo and how many listeners will stay with them? We won't be certain of that until some time next year. But for now, WBCN owes Opie and Anthony big time.

they can't Howard refuses to leave K-Rock and his deal verifiess he will be at K-Rock and Howard sure as hell wouldn't choose to be on a station of 'clones.' To him it would be like at the end of the second Harry Mudd episode of Star Trek: TOS when all of Mudd's wife clones pestered him.

I think the more feasible thing would be moving O&A to KROCK.

How about Howard in the morning, Cane and Cabbie in the daytime, O&A, Ron and Fez and than music overnights. Make WNEW, standards or something like country.

Howard,O&A and Don & Mike are on the same stations in many cities except New York. K-rock is not going to give up their biggest ratings show and if you move O&A to k-rock then they have to change formats to all talk .in a perfect place they all would be on wnew and they could sell it as a whole to other markets.

Roger, where the hell have you been? Good to see you again. I hate having to travel to Florida to say hi. :-)

Why do people always ask why O&A and needle nose aren't on the same station? Is it that f'n hard to push a preset button to change stations? Are all your favorite TV shows on one channel?

Exactly..I don't know why so many people think that Infinity cares about having one great station when they have two great shows. Stern (I hate to bring him up in here)was talking about how the tv ratings for thursday jumped from NBC's Friends to CBS's CSI back to NBC's ER and I think that it is the same thing with radio. I think that the only reason why WBCN's morning ratings went up was because Boston fans started to hear O&A talk about him in a different way and people wanted to hear the hypocrasy for themselves. Or maybe I'm completely wrong.

Then don't. ;)

The main objective here is that with both shows on one station, and an entirely new station going for other demos, Infinity can pull more money.

Then again when you take the rock and put it on its own entity, the ratings would suck because of the O&A/talk station and they'd be the next WNEW Where Rock Lives (But Nobody Seems To Notice).

Who's to say that he'd stay anyway? Hell, if it was a half-talk, half-music format, Coleman may be a better man for the job anyway.

But my point of Sniffen's post is that it was somewhat well thought-out... and the point that Infinity is beating themselves up... well that's true. Two stations, same market, aimed at the same listeners. Of course one is gonna steal from the other....

To look at it from an economic standpoint. Competition is productive. It forces different companies, in this case radio stations to improve quality, come up with new formats, new hooks, etc. Don't be in such a rush to develop a monopoly or oligopoly here.

Ok, the most I know about radio is how to steal them, ho ho ::whacky horn::. But, when a company competes against itself, how can it win? Sure there are two seperate stations, but both are going after the same demo and both share many of the same sponsors. I don't know what the perfect solution is, but I don't think that what they are doing is productive. Shit, O&A built WNEW back up to a NY power station. And Howard built most of his "career" at K-Rock. So, I guess my conclusion would be to leave things as they are, but I don't think that's necessarily best, and I don't see how competition for the same demo in the same company can be beneficial.

Irony Part I:
WBCN-Boston's "Alternative Rock" having 9 hours a day of TALK RADIO combined with O&A and Stern.
Irony Part II:
Giving away 3 pairs of Grave Rave (hosted by O&A with Crystal Method) tix per hour during Stern's morning shift.

There will never be a simple "solution" to all of this ... O&A were never expected to achieve the success they have by Infinity, which cowtows to Howard.

It would be like a Yankees fan interfering with an opposting outfielder at a Mets game and turning a sure out into a home run to clinch the NLCS or World Series... sure, Infinity (the Mets) like what he did, but they are not sure they like him .

Stay calm, though, because O&A always win in the end... while the syndication is half-assed at this point, it will either be straightened out soon or O&A will be "traded" to someplace like ClearChannel. Of course, Dr. Sniffen, DDS, would know more about that...

It's the same on "The Rock Station", WYSP in Philly. And there's potential to get worse.... D&M want to get on YSP.

I would go with the "I'm completely wrong" part... Howard's numbers-13.1, o&a - 4.4, almost a 7 point difference, who do you think has the larger audience? I don't think a couple of "plugs" from o&a(4.4) means a 2 point jump for Howard!!!
