I am starting this thread due to something O&A were talking about last week and how some markets are screwing them.

Well they are doing well in New York, Boston and Philadelphia. They appear to be stinking everywhere else right now. I know it's early but some places like Chicago and Dallas don't really give a crap that they are there. In Washington the ratings were terrible and they cut out the end of the show to go to Redskins pre game shows.

If the market is just putting them on in any part of the day, not live, cut in and out of the show, why bother. If they are not live, I think that they should not be syndicated there.

I also think being syndicated so soon in all of these cities are also a detriment to the show because they have to explain everything again to all the new markets. It gets a little tedious and boring. However it has improved consderably from when they first started syndication. I was tuing out a lot because of the constant repeating of bits. If you think about it seems they basically talk about and play their show to New York, Philly and Boston.

I think syndication to all of these cities - successful or not - is worth it. It gives them national exposure, a chance to make a name for themselves outside of NY & Boston. I think it will take some time if they are to be successful in each city. Think about it, when they came here noone really knew who the hell they were, let alone what they were about - I myself started listening to them by chance 4 months after they were on the air. But a few years later, here they are, #1 and being syndicated to other markets.

I agree, the repetitive nature of bits for the new markets is annoying, but its the price we as listeners have to pay. It has been a lot less repetitve lately though, and I'm still laughing.

Even if they don't succeed in Dallas or DC, I say its worth the shot - hell, they did XFL Gameday for three weeks, it bombed, and they survived. Granted, it wasn't their radio show, but the exposure was there - and exposure, no matter how small, is always better than none.

Washington is going to be the toughest city for them. For whatever reason, Don&Mike were very loved in DC and they were switched to Mid day while having #1 ratings. So there is going to be problems. O&A won't win over D&M's fans because most of them are probably older.

With the success they have had in Philly and Boston, infinity might be re-thinking putting them on so late in other markets. Chances are we will see them live in a lot of cities that they are currently tape delayed in.

Of course syndication is worth it. Yes, the show may have lost a bit of its local flavor, and it does get old having to hear things explained every time they enter a new market, but there are benefits to the listener. Greater exposure for the show should bring about better more high-profile guests. I think you need to give it more than just a couple of months to decide if syndication is worth it or not. You need to give it a grace period. Unfortunately that period differs from city to city.

Froy I know it is worth it for some markets, but examples like Washington, Dallas, and Chicago are a joke right now. The boys are getting pitiful ratings and those stations could not care less about them. That's why they put them in late at night. And Washington, I guess just likes to listen to their pig fuckers in Don and Mike.

i too have been thinking about this. of course syndication is worth it for them. but some of their best bits were done durring live reads, and now with syndication, they have to have a schedule, so they can't really go over on time. i also think that explaining everything to the new markets is boring, and the rock-hole thing is old.

I haven't heard how o&a are doing in the Sacramento area yet, but I would be very surprised if they failed here...considering the station they are on and the format of this station. I think the biggest detriment for them is being taped delayed here. In my opinion, there is a difference between a live show and tape delayed. Don and Mike have not been the same since they went to tape delay.

Unfortunately if o&a were live, their competition is Don and Mike...and d&m have a huge following here in Sacramento.

And being a newbie listener, I appreciate the explanations of the bits or people involved in the show. I just wish when they do the Best Of shows, they would go farther back and play older shows. I would like to hear shows before I became a listener, not shows I heard the previous week...

I know Opie made mention of some points, but for the show to succeed, there are a few factors that need to come into play:

1) The show must be on FM
2) The show must be on a station with 1 of the 2 CBS formats: Hot Talk or Extreme.
3) The show will always do best when it is on the same station as HOO-HOO-HOO.
4) The show must be heard live.
5) the show NEEDS full support by the PD and management.

It's not a fool-proof road to success. They are on WJFK, a Hot Talk FM with Hoo-Hoo-Hoo in the morning. But they seem to be lacking the support they need to succeed there...not to mention the unique scenario with D&M.

You can't base anything on one ratings book in those Markets. It took O&A years to conquer NY, but they did it. Give them time in Washington, etc. The only reason the ratings in Philly and Boston are significant is because O&A helped the station leap-frog longtime rivals (WMMR and WAAF respectively). Even in those cities it's too early to get out the WOW Cake.

The bottom line for Infinity is O&A have proven in NY (the largest market in the country) that they can sell ads and they will prove that in any market they go to.

As for whether the show is better for us as NY listeners, it a rather academic argument considering Infinity and O&A are going to continue to spread the virus as far and wide as possible whether we like it or not.

I agree that O&A should be on live in Sac. When I talk to KXOA they swear that they want to play O&A live but O&A wont let them! Can this be true???
Heres what they e-mailed me:
"O&A wanted to have the drive time position on our station. We fought to keep
them live, but they wanted the prime real estate which is 3P-7P on KXOA.
Soooo..... They are on tape delay...."

Is there anywhere to see how O&A's ratings are doing in Sacramento?

Just remember for the saying in New York, New York.

"If you can make it here, you can make in anywhere"

O&A will eventually conquer DC and other markets. Some places they won't suceed in. Different parts of the country react differently to O&A's humor.
For example DC's listeners tend to get the humor slower since they are close to down south. Don and Mike fit perfectly with them since the show had a slower pace. O&A's brand of humor tends to be breaknecking in speed which matches the rush hour.

Just remember. Rome wasn't bulit in a day.

Live or tape delayed, it doesn't matter to me. If they finally get syndicated in LA, it'd be well worth it for me.

Especially if they can somehow manage to get Leykis off the air in the process.

Give it time my friends...they still have local flavor and Opie said this a while back

"Im 1/3rd of the show...Ant is 1/3rd of the show...and you guys, the listeners, are the other 1/3rd.."

or something to that effect...some of the most hilarious shit comes from us...they will have a much larger newer and fresh 1/3rd to draw from now...more freaks geeks and deeks to choose from...

So just give the guys some time...they too are also pretty new to broadcasting nationwide and things will settle down so to speak...or heat up...

Think of all the new hot fresh lesbian teens they can have flown in from all over the country now :)
