There are a bunch of ways to know things-through scientific reasoning, through logical systems, through faith, and even directly(Kekule experienced the structure of the carbon benzene ring directly).

The vaunted scientific method has it's limitations, too, and scientific "beliefs" change all the time(if you don't think there are scientific beliefs just like there are religious beliefs, read Thomas Kuhn-The Structure of Scientific Revolution).Only when a substantial body of scientific facts goes against the currently held theories,is there a so-called "paradigm change".

Big Bang? The time taken for the clusters of clusters of galaxies seen today to form is way longer than the suposed age of the universe, and the clusters of clusters appear in sheets rather than uniformly,as predicted by the big bang.Until gravity is really understood(quantum gravitation= exchanging gravitons=my ass ),it's a joke to even speculate about stuff like the Big Bang.

The Big Bang theory is a real stinker with a huge amount of internal inconsistencies;yet people don't rail about it like they rail about the inconsistencies involved in religious belief.I doubt I'll hear Opie moaning while Anthony expounds on the "There was No Big Bang" anytime soon.

Religion makes me fucking sick! I fucking hate when Religious people put me down for not beliving in their god. I prayed every night my whole life and one day I saw George Carlin on HBO. His words turned me around. "Are we supposed to belive that theres a invisable man up in heaven, who gave us ten things we can't do."

I'm an Athiest. I don't understand how anyone with a rational brain cell in their head can believe in God. I enjoy reading about religion and studying religious text, but more for the sociological and philosophical implications than any enlightenment I may derive. In fact, the only religion that makes any sense to me at all is modern Satanism (which for all intents and purposes, is just another spin on Athiesm), and even that is inherently flawed.

I come from a very religious family, but at about the age of seven I realized that it was all bullshit. I still attended church, still attended classes, and still did all those things that were expected of any young Catholic. Basically, I was afraid to say anything, for fear that if I denounced my faith, I'd be subjected to even more church, even more classes, and even more rituals and attempted brainwashing these cult followers believed and participated in. Oh well, such was life...

Anyway, for those interested, and have some time to kill, click here for a shitload of Atheist and Agonstic quotes.

There is also a big differnece between being privately or personally spiritual and being a fundamentalist. When faith is practiced privately, it causes little harm. It is when the faithful organize and utilize their collective power and attempt to spread their beliefs that harm occurs. It is the reason it took so long for evolution to be taught in schools, why so many liberal legislations have taken so long to be passed, why opposing fiaths enter constant conflict, etc.

Ugh, I work with a damn Witness.

Hell, even if I was a religious person, I don't think I could ever stand for a religion that:

1) You observe NO holidays, except for their version of Easter. Not even Christmas, national holidays, nothing. Everything is considered "pagan" to them.
2) You have to do FUCKING HOMEWORK. They have these "meetings". In order to participate in these meetings, you have to do a shitload of Bible study. That's homework.
3) You are shunned if you socially interact with non-Witnesses.... especially if you date one.
4) You are so blinded by your faith that it pretty much consumes your entire life.

Bible thumpers, however, though they celebrate holidays, don't do homework, and don't go door-to-door, are much worse when it comes to devoting every moment of spare time to the church.

I can't even remember the last time I was in church...but, I do believe that there is some "force" out there. And I believe that there is a after-life. I used to pray every night before I went to bed, but now I don't. There are many things we can't explain in the world, I have my own questions like "Where did the dinosaurs come from?". There were no dinosaurs in the Bible, and we are forced to believe that the world was created like 5,000 years ago etc. etc. etc.

God Bless America. Land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her, Thru the night with a light from above. From the mountains, To the prairies, To the oceans, White with foam. God bless America. My home sweet home. God Bless America, Land that I love, Stand beside her, And guide her, Through the night, With the light from above, From the mountains, To the prairies, To the ocean, White with foam, God bless America, My home sweet home. God bless America, My home sweet home.

Well, lookie lookie here. I missed a thread that was on my favourite subject. Since, basically everyone except Noellevious is a non-believer, I would be preaching to the coverted.

Besides, just like a question that was posed not too long ago, in Ken'sPen's thread, Things I don't understand about OpieAnthony.Com, he asked... "3. Why is there so much anger between some members of the board, and yet, Fight Club remains so lame?" To which Froy answered, "Because the best fights are the ones that aren't planned." Thus then, I like to bring it up when it is unexpected ;).

I am an agnostic person myself. I tried the whole "praise god" thing. I was even in a youth group once for cyring out loud. It became apparent to me that they only exist to fuel some orgnizations motives (usually politically or monetary)

I go to St. Johns University. Even though they won't cram it down your throat like I expected them to, I still fucking cringe whenver I hear the words "retreat" or "rally". To me they are no worse than a fucking meet of a cult.

I didn't get a chance to listen what ant said, but I'm not merely joining the bandwagon as it may seem.

The last time I went to church I remmber the pastor practially begging for the congreation to give them money. When I saw him driving a luxury car, I just gave up on religon.

I still believe in a god and I always have belived in a god. But to me he's not gonna tell me what to do and what not to do.

Now is it just me or is Catholicism whacked?
I know this girl who is close to being a hardcore catholic. Her family almost dicates her moral decisions. It pisses me off that a silly religon forces her to not make choices for her self.

OK, I see religions such as Catholicism, and Jehovawhateverism, are being singled out,

I would like to point out that Religion and Faith are 2 seperate things.

With that being said, Fuck 'em Both!

I believe in a spiritual or I should say superior being. I give it not the qualities of man, i.e. being compassionate, a male or female or understanding. To do so would give it human qualities and thus take away from its superiority. I pray to it daily but I ask not for material possessions. I use it not as an excuse to commit crimes or atrocities. It is not an excuse or an attempt to rationalize any fears; I do that with my own courage. Nor do I use it as a crutch in my times of need. For in those times, I have my strength.

I need not go to a house of worship for I believe in it within my heart and my heart is the only temple I need for it. I give it not my money, for I can not buy it's acceptance of me. I read not books about it for I learn from it through first hand experiences not books written centuries ago with nameless authors and unknown story tellers.

So, you may ask why would I believe in something like that? Believe you me, I gain plenty from it. For each time I acknowledge its existence I reaffirm the notion that we stand not alone and with that I gain wisdom. After all, do you sincerely believe we have come this far alone? Foolish to think we are that superior and above all other kinds, seen and not seen.

Make absolutely no mistake about it... Religion is a business. It is the biggest business in the world. The Catholic Church is the richest organization in the world. It sounds all nice to praise god, but in the end it all comes down to who can put the most money in the collection plate to buy their blessings.

Last semester I took a geology course as apart of my university core. The class was taught by a devout Jesuit. He would lecture class after class concerning samples of rocks and how they were millions of years old and would also give us figures about the world being exactly 4.7 billion years old thanks to radiometric dating. When asked how he can stand up there and tell us how the world is proven to be that old, yet dedicate to a religion that says were only a few thousand, his answer was elusive to say the least. He fumbled around alot and never really gave anything that resembled an answer.

With literally thousands of religions in this world it seems absurd that you would be viewed as incorrect just because you ascribe to a religion that differs from others. Catholicism has way too many wholes in it. I have trouble swallowing the idea that if Timothy McVeigh received pennance before he was killed then he died with a "clean soul" was resolved of all wrong he did and is now living on a cloud somewhere with a firefighter that was killed at the wtc.

I think the basic message of Christianity is great.
I believe in the Golden Rule.
I think there is much wisdom in the story of the fall of Satan. The "better to rule in......" The devil in that story was not evil incarnate, rather simply self serving.
In that sense doing evil is simply putting your interests ahead of others, even when it causes them harm. That you are willing to cause someone great harm if it results in the slightest benefit to you. This ranges from extremes of armed robbery to sitting on a train when an old person stands.
