The way I see it (and I'm learning this year that most don't see it my way) is that Valentine's Day is supposed to be a day where you and the person you love celebrate the "us" in you. It's about having this one day set aside to show affection and appreciation to each other, especially since it's hard to do that now-a-days with so much going on. It's about sitting and remember what it is you love about one another and about being together. I don't buy gifts on Valentine's Day. I might get some chocolate to share, but if I give a gift, it's usually something I make myself. But, like I said, most people don't see things the way I do, and they believe it is all about buying cards, candy and flowers - to hell with the rest of it... I guess it's easier that way.
