May 15, 2002 -- The outrageous "Opie & Anthony" radio show turned into a deadly serious version of "America's Most Wanted" yesterday - when a live caller told stunned listeners he'd once killed two men in a drug-deal-gone-bad.
Some of the biggest fans of the popular WNEW show include cops, who later flooded the station with incredulous calls.

The NYPD's cold-case squad is taking the call seriously enough that its investigators are heading to the station's Midtown offices today to listen to a transcript of the show.

"He's either very delusional or he's telling the truth, and he didn't sound like the kind of guy to make this up," co-host Anthony Cumia said.

"We're not making this up, and it's not a bit . . . When he said, 'murder,' my head spun around."

The man - who identified himself on air as a 44-year-old retired trucker named "Eddie" from Ridgewood, Queens - said he was calling to offer one of the show's characters, a homeless woman known as "Stalker Patty," a place to stay.

When Opie and Anthony asked why, the man said it was to make up for a past mistake.

Pressed on what he'd done, the man said he had killed two drug thugs in 1977 after going with a pal to a warehouse on Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn, as backup on a deal.

The man described how he blew the pair away with a long-range rifle when one of them pulled a gun.

He said he and his friend took the bodies to a marsh, poured gasoline on them and burned them. They tossed some of the remains into garbage trucks in the meat-packing district, he said.

"With all the crap in my life, maybe this [offering 'Patty' shelter] will give me a gold star to get me to heaven," he said.

The man said he had confessed his crime to a shrink, who urged him to talk about it.

"I'm not worried about confessing because they'll never find the body parts," he said.

But when a cop called and asked to meet with him, he hurriedly said he had to get off the line.

"I'm sweating like hell right now," he mumbled before hastily hanging up.

Regardless of whether or not he sounds like a good guy, however slow he may be, this guy confessed to a premeditated double murder during which he chopped up the bodies and stashed the pieces all over New York state. He obviously knew he was doing something wrong.

Whether they were pieces of scum or not, it was premeditated, not self defense. Besides if he knew his friend was in trouble why did he allow him to go in the first place. He has a weapon and body bags ready to kill them and than he knows to get rid of the bodies and the murder weapon.

ANd I can't think of anyone I know that has helped someone murder someone.

I don't know how the law is, but say it was a different situation. What would happen in this scenario. It is vigilantism. A guy's wife is raped on her way home from work. He hunt's the rapists down, kills them and gets rid of their bodies. Yes, the guy was right murdering these fuckers but I would think he would go to prison by not letting the police deal with it and taking justice into his own hands.

Look at Bernie Goetz the guy who shot those 4 lowlifes on the NYC train. He was protecting himself and he got 8 and a half months in jail on a weapons charge and one of the pieces of trash was awarded millions in damages.

I haven't listened to that show yet -- does he give the impression then that it was premeditated? Because the article above certainly doesn't. If I was going to be involved in a drug deal in some warehouse in Brooklyn I'd certainly be carrying a weapon of some sort (like an M1 Abrams).

Not that I give a shit what happens to the guy. He's either a liar or an idiot for saying anything at all.

Actually, I hope they don't arrest him (if they're going to) until after he "helps out" Stalker Patty.

I'm right behind you jmoore... it wasnt a premeditated killing. For it to be that way, he would have to have intended to kill the others before he got to the warehouse, and have planned it out ahead of time.

It may not have been premeditated by definition, but he was definitely prepared.

Everyone on the show (including callers) kept implying that he would be arrested based on his "confession". some woman even called because she remembered Marcia Clark getting a conviction without a body. But there was a big difference here. His on air confession cannot be used against him (Miranda) - The most the police could do is bring him in for questioning and if he said it was all a joke, there would be nothing to convict him on. The only (remote) possiblity is that someone cared that these drug dealers were missing, filed a report, and they had SOME evidence to go on. As it is, the cold case unit would have very little to go on.

When they confronted him about the bags didn't he say he "brought them along just in case" or something like that? I think that if it were to go to court a guy going to a drug deal with a rifle and bags to dispose the evidence with would qualify as pre-meditation.

czo, bingo. That is what I was talking about when I said it was premeditated. If he knew his friend was going to be in trouble, why did they go there in the first place if it wasn't to kill the 2 pieces of scum.

And if it was self defense, he had no reason to get rid of the weapon and the bodies.

1.how come they didn't burn the bodies to ashes?
2. why would you have to chop up burned up bodies?

see, this is what i get for shooting my mouth off and not *actually* listening to the show... If that's the case, that he brought bags and had planned on killing the other dealers, or had thought about it, the cops might be able to get him for 1st degree murder, but at very least 2nd.
