| Hanger-On Registered: Apr. 01  | XXXXX MAINELLIJR REPORT XXXXX MONDAY APRIL 09, 2001 09:21:38 UTC XXXXX Sources reveal that Opie and Anthony (Greg Hughes and Anthony Cumia), high-rated Afternoon Drive DJs at WNEW-FM in NYC, have initiated contract talks with Clear Channel through their Agent. The Extreme Talk Duo's Contract with Infinity Broadcasting will expire in May and the pair have been vocal on-air about exploring new opportunities, including a move to the coveted morning drive spot. Clear Channel is the nation's largest radio syndicate, owning over 250 stations nationwide, including WHTZ (Z-100, 100.3), WAXQ (Q-104, 104.3), WKTU (103.5), WLTW (Lite FM, 106.7), and WTJM (Jammin' Oldies, 105.1) in New York City. Clear Channel does not currently offer the "Extreme Talk" format on any of its stations. However, their unwaivering support of their Tampa, FL DJ, "Bubba the Love Sponge," shows a willingness to move in to the questionably profitable format. The move to Clear Channel would surely be conditional on National syndication for Opie and Anthony -- something denied them by Infinity's Head of Programming, Dan Mason. The most likely Flag Ship Station for the popular Opie and Anthony Show would be WTJM (Jammin' 105). Clear Channel has been abandoning the "Jammin' Oldies" format across the country and rumors have circulated that the NYC station would be the next to flip formats. Program Director of WTJM, Joel Salkowitz, declined comment. Jay Thomas, current Morning Personality at WTJM said, "That would be the most moronic thing this station could ever do." Opie and Anthony have been unavailible for comment, due to vacation. Studio phones were not answered during their "Worst-of" programming last week. The Office of David Crowl, Clear Channel's Head, said, "It is Clear Channel's policy that all negotiations, or even the existence of negotiations, are kept strictly confidential." WNEW's Program Director Jeremy Coleman did not return repeated phone calls. Bob Buchannan, Program Director of Q-104 declined comment.
