June 2001 — PREVIEW
Not So Dumb Jocks
With their guys-will-be-guys routine, New York radio stars Opie and Anthony have gained a huge and loyal following. They may be rude and crude on the air, but these two average Joes are more savvy than you might think.

By Jesse Oxfeld

No professional wrestlers are in attendance at the World Wrestling Federation New York theme restaurant one night in late January, but the cavernous and windowless dining-and-entertainment establishment in Times Square is nevertheless jam-packed and rocking in anticipation of the evening's main attraction. NBC is preparing to tape the premiere episode of XFL Gameday, a pregame show to air on several local television stations for the much-hyped XFL football league, and just past the bar, where tables surround a small stage in front of a large mosh pit, hundreds of screaming fans are begging women to whip 'em out. XFL Gameday (which has since been canceled) is being hosted by the New York radio duo Opie and Anthony, whose show is the city's top-ranked afternoon drive-time program in its target demographic of young men -- a feat accomplished almost exclusively through word of mouth. The pair's stock-in-trade is sophomoric sex humor, most notably their Whip 'em Out Wednesdays campaign (a.k.a. "WOW"), wherein women listeners are encouraged to flash -- only if they want to, notes Opie -- their, um, 'em at drivers of cars bearing WOW bumper stickers, most issued by the radio station but some homemade. The crowd this night is the duo's fan base, and it goes wild when O&A, as they're called, finally take the stage.

Is this magazine specifically sold in the NY Metro area, or nationwide? I ask so I don't go looking for it hours upon end before finding out it's just sold in NY. Thanks to anybody who knows.

Brill's Content is a nationwide magazine.
It was started by Stephen Brill, who, if I'm not mistaken used to be the Editor-in-chief at Newsweek.
It's purpose is to be media about the media. When it first hit newstands, it made big news by doing a major story on how the media investigated and reported Monica. Essentially, they're a watchdog, making sure journalists and the companies behind the news play fair.
I'm surprised no one's heard of it, b/c they made big news during the election as well.

If anyone finds the magazine, can you please post where to find it. Thanks.

By the way, I was thinking maybe one of the big book stores in the mall may have it.

I picked mine up at Barnes & Noble(Current Events) yesterday. Good article but not as much "content" as you would expect, especially with a magazine called Brill's "Content".

TThe Mag can be found in your friendly neighborhood Barnes and Noble and Borders.. just a trade magazine on the industry, ... nothing special, but when all the O*A fans get the magazine and sales increase by about 5%, they'll wonder where it came from

That was an excellent article. The writer has definately done his homework.

Run, don't walk to your local newsstand for this.

I just got the magazine yesterday. Great article. Jesse, the writer, attempts to reveal whatever O&A haven't revealed about the inner workings of their show. To sum up: O&A are smarter than they look. O&A know who their audience is, and they know what their audience wants.

I picked it up at a newsstand in NYC (it's below Port Authority, just as you enter the Subway on the left). The magazine has a head shot picture of Warren Buffet on the cover (a really old geezer). The name reads

(small print)BRILL'S
(large print)CONTENT

in white letters on black background.
