We can throw facts back and forth about the economy, domestic policy,etc.. under Reagan. It would be pointless. No one is going to change anyones mind.

As far as Reagan "just being there when the Soviet Union fell" He wasn't. Bush was. Reagan did cause it. Here are acouple of quotes from some prominent Soviet citizens .
quote:

Ladies and gentlemen, if it had not been for the Reagan defense buildup, if the United States had not demonstrated that it is willing not only to stand up for freedom but to devote considerable sums of money to defending it, we probably would not be sitting here today having a free discussion between Russians and Americans." --Boris Pinsker, Soviet Economist.

"American policy in the 1980s was a catalyst for the collapse of the Soviet Union." --Oleg Kalugin, former KGB general (Victory: The Reagan Administration's Secret Strategy That Hastened the Collapse of the Soviet Union, page xi.)

By that time, the USSR was on its last leg though. They had been bogged down in Afghanistan, their economy was beginning to tumble, political power splits became more prevalent, and the puppet governments of the Eastern bloc were losing their control. To say that Reagan caused all of this isnt even close to being historically accurate. This isn't to say that he didnt play a role, every President since Wilson has played a role in the rise & fall of the Soviet Union.

The State Capitalist economy of the USSR was dying at that point and there was much opposition and dissent inside. It couldn't sustain itself so it just collapsed onto itself.

Are you a scientist? Can you see into the future like that? How many amazing technologies were thought to be so much pie in the sky before they were reality? Radio, TV, satellites, men in space, supersonic travel... Which is not to say I think SDI will work. I don't know. But to say it just isn't likely to work so don't fund is completely shortsighted and without argumental merit.
And free healthcare? How about free housing and free food and free money and free cars and free lapdances... hell, let's not have people pay for anything on their own! The government can supply all!

Yeah Free Healthcare is such a bad idea I mean those poor people can just fucking die, its their fault that they don't have money. What's the problem with Free Healthcare? Would that stop Insurance Companies for being so evil. IF there ever is a satan, it would be insurance companies. To stop someone's life just because it doesn't fit into the profit quota is despicable. What a great country where people pay tax dollars to develop new weapons of mass destruction. Also Bush just can't go and break an Internation Treaty just like that. That would open the floodgates for every country to break other treaties. He already broke the Kyoto Treaty too. So why doesn't Russia and China start stockpiling hundreds of thousands of nukes. I mean the US is the greatest country in the world, and it can't do wrong.

Well, my dear, you can thank Al and Tipper Gore for their censorship of "Warning" labels on music. As far as I know Al and Tipper are not part of the "moral police", as you describe it.

Since when do I support democrats? I think theyre as much full of bullshit as republicans are. They are basically the same party with slightly different bullshit. So don't assume I am some democratic partisan.

I didn't assume anything. You mentioned censorship as being done by "moral police" and I clarified that those censoring music were not part of the republican party or the moral police. And you claim to be of neither party but you want every program for free, including healthcare. That is a very socialist outlook you have. In that case, you are a left wing democrat. If you don't understand why I have said that then you obviously don't know the scale of the party.

Socialized medical care was introduced by Richard Nixon in the early 70's. It didn't fly then either.

Is it because policians are influenced by Insurance Companies to the point they live on greenbacks? Why does it work in so many european countries and canada?

I have ideas that wouldn't fit anywhere in the Democratic Party. Well I do have to say that intelligent discussion if very rare for oa.com instead of the usual republicans are nazis.

That's probably part of it.
The government has a tendency to fuck up every agency it runs. ie: IRS,welfare, medicare, medicaid,VA Hospital,etc... If the government took over health care, it would turn into a bureaucratic boondoggle. I think that is what most people are afraid of. Waiting 6 to 9 months for a bypass operation just won't cut it. That's one of the reasons alot of Canadians come across the border when they need an operation quickly.

Yes, that's right.
I'm against a government-run, all-free healthcare system, so it therefore stands to reason that I think all poor people should up and die.
Nice logic.

Just to shove in my view on this topic..I used to live in England and enjoyed the benefit of free heathcare. Yes, waiting times for non emergency treatment was a bit excessive in the hospitals, but Emergency care was spot on. As for private insurance, my mother has it through her work and when she needed an operation that wasnt life threatening, she went "private" and got it done. SO...In my Humble Opinion, you can have a subsudised healthcare system and a private system that work hand in hand to promote the welfare of the population.

Adolescentmasturbator, to add to the political debate, an English commedian said this about the American Political system "On one hand you have the Democrats, who are like Margaret Thatcher and her party, and on the other hand you have the Republicans who are like Margaret Thatcher and her party"

Socialized medicine..... well, here is the biggest problem with that. If medicine were to be socialized ( free health care) the government would have to regulate all costs involved. That would mean that health care professionals would eventually be "capped". With little or no financial motivation, over the course of time we would lose the quality of health care we have become accustomed to. Also, much like with current insurance company policies, in an effort to reduce costs, high end tests and medications will be discouraged in search of alternative ( cheaper) treatments. Does it suck that we pay for healthcare? Yes. Is socialized medicine the answer? No.

As for alternative energy, converting gasoline engines to alcohol would go a long way. Alcohol burning cars get better milage, burn cleaner, and are safer. The alcohol used comes from corn, which would boost the domestic farming economy. Billions of dollars spent supporting the economies of oil producing nations would be re-invested at home. The lack of demand for oil to produce gasoline would free up oil for electricity generation. This is not new technology, it has been around for years, the problem? Oil Companies. "Big Oil" as we will call them is one of the most powerful lobby groups in Washington. They have their hands in the pockets of damn near every congressman and senator that matters. Big oil knows that conversion to alcohol would all but destroy 50% of the oil business, and they are in no hurry to lose their cash cow.

IMHO, if you don't like the way this country is run, you are free to leave at any time. It's not perfect, but I'll be damned if it isn't the best country in the world to live in.

On the contrary, while HMO's and the like dictate certain standards, they do not limit doctor's incomes. Private practices have the choice to accept different health plans. Also, the consumer has the right to choose a different coverage as well. If medicine becomes socialized those choices will be gone. Without free enterprise, our brightest would be doctor's, nurses, practicioners etc... will be less likely to seek careers in the medical field. We will in effect get the "dumbing down" of medicine.

Kid.... amen brother!
