MUSIC REVIEW; Fans rave on at Foxboro show

Yes, there were naked breasts on stage at yesterday's WBCN River Rave.
But they belonged to the male lead singer of the rap metal band Sevendust. And while it wasn't a very pretty sight, at least it wasn't going to get the station into any hot water.

Last year, 'BCN picked up a lot of flak and plenty of free publicity, after a camera crew prompted women to lift their shirts. But this year, the event was on its best behavior.

"We were watching the news last night, and they were saying you guys had to be good and keep your shirts on," Sevendust announced upon hitting the stage. And when moshing started to get out of hand during the punk band New Found Glory's outdoor set, the band abruptly stopped playing and announced, "All you guys better step back and make sure the girls have some room."

Both the crowd and the 'BCN announcers seemed less testosterone- crazed this year. Cameras still roamed the audience, but the shots were strictly G-rated. When one tall blond started lifting her shirt during one of Live's power ballads, the camera cut away.

By the time the sun set, Foxboro police were still reporting that the day had been peaceful. And by then, the band onstage was Green Day, whose fans started a riot at the Hatch Shell back in 1994. But last night, the only sign of destruction was the band setting fire to its own drum kit.

After an afternoon filled with comeback acts (white rapper Everlast and British hard rockers the Cult) and standard-issue rap metal (System of a Down), the big league rocking got under way with Green Day's set. Live might have sounded better if they weren't following Green Day's fiery outburst, but it's hard to imagine this ponderous band sounding too great under any circumstances.

Back-to-back sets by the Black Crowes and Aerosmith waved the flag for classic rock. The Crowes' "Soul Singing" is this band at its best, a head-on collision of heavy rock and Southern soul. And it just got better when Aerosmith's Joe Perry joined them for Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well."

After the day's longest delay, Aerosmith did the day's shortest set - only five songs, about half as long as everybody else.

Before the abrupt end, they were in strong form with Perry throttling his guitar on "Train Kept a-Rollin'," and Steven Tyler nailing the high notes on the recent hit "Jaded." But they definitely shortchanged this crowd.

Wearing an outfit straight out of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Marilyn Manson looked less like the Prince of Darkness than the King of Camp. He still offers good dirty fun, but now that Eminem has taken his place as the scariest guy in rock, its hard to remember what the outrage was about. Like the River Rave itself, Manson is a lot less scary than he was last year.
