O&A Board Regular Registered: Sep. 00 | Opie and Anthony vow return to local air By Jim Sullivan, Globe Staff, 6/7/2001 The duo of Opie and Anthony - arguably the hottest radio property in the country - will be heard live again in the Boston market, doing their 3-to-7 p.m. weekday show, Anthony vowed yesterday. ''We will be up there for the fall [ratings] book,'' he promised. The hitch: No one knows exactly on which station. Opie and Anthony, who gained notoriety as WAAF-FM DJs for a 1998 April Fool's Day prank stating that Mayor Thomas M. Menino was dead, announced they have re-signed with the CBS-owned Infinity Broadcasting. The new deal makes them national radio stars, as their show begins syndication in 22 of the top 50 markets, including nine of the top 10, starting today with Philadelphia. New York newspapers reported the deal was worth $30 million, but Opie said yesterday the actual figure was ''a lot less.'' The question remains when and where the duo will air here. Infinity has five stations in this market: WBCN-FM, WZLX-FM, WBZ-AM, WODS-FM, and WBMX-FM. But representatives of rock stations WBCN and WZLX - the likeliest homes for the DJ pair that has a lock on the coveted 18-34 male demographic - said yesterday there was no room for their show. Since being bounced from WAAF in 1998, Opie and Anthony have landed on their feet at WNEW-FM in New York. But their contract with Infinity expired last Friday. They'd been negotiating with Infinity and another syndicating company - ''tug of war'' battles that were ''blowing my mind,'' Opie said. Had they left Infinity, Opie said, they would have landed a morning drive spot and gone up against rival Howard Stern. Now, in the Boston market, they will probably either challenge WBCN afternoon mainstay Nik Carter - or replace him, as was rumored during the negotiations. At the WBCN-FM River Rave two weeks ago, Opie considered the possibility of moving full time to 'BCN, where the pair have appeared in bits and pieces over the past year, including on Carter's show. On one hand, he said he loved the idea; on the other, their talk format would convert a longtime rock station into a virtual talk station, as Stern holds down the morning slot. Still, Opie said, '''BCN has the first shot'' at the show. WBCN program director Oedipus said yesterday, ''I am extremely happy they're with Infinity and not another network. But with Howard in the morning, I can definitely say they will not do afternoon drive at 'BCN.'' Oedipus said WBCN has advertisers that, for various reasons, don't want their products pushed on Stern's show but do want placement on Carter's afternoon slot. When asked on the air yesterday, Opie and Anthony expressed admiration for Oedipus but noted that the program director once said Stern would never be live on WBCN, which he is now. ''Certain things happen,'' Opie said. WZLX-FM program director Buzz Knight said his classic-hits station was happy with its afternoon drive man, Chuck Nowlin. As the station came in No. 1 among adults 25-54 in the last ratings period, Nowlin said, ''If ain't broke, don't fix it.'' Among the other possibilities: Infinity could farm the Boston market broadcast to a station it does not own.
