| O&A Board Regular Registered: Sep. 00  | Opie & Anthony add drive-time pop to WBCN By Jim Sullivan, Globe Staff,, 8/7/2001 Starting today, the radio airwaves in Boston will get a little ruder, a little cruder, and a lot more competitive. WBCN-FM (104.1) made a long-debated and long-awaited decision yesterday afternoon: It will simulcast the controversial afternoon drive-time ''Opie & Anthony Show,'' which originates on WNEW-FM in New York and is syndicated throughout the country. Opie and Anthony take to the airwaves at 3 p.m., making a regular return for the first time since 1998, when they were kicked off WAAF-FM (107.3-FM) after proclaiming Mayor Thomas M. Menino dead in an April Fools' Day prank. Expect them to puff their new role in Boston and to attack local rivals, including their former bosses at WAAF. In making the move, modern rock station WBCN effectively commits its two prime ratings periods - morning and afternoon drive - to a talk format, with top-rated shock jock Howard Stern filling the early hours. Stern is No. 1 in Boston among men 18-plus; Opie and Anthony are No. 1 in New York in that same demographic. WBCN's current afternoon DJ, Nik Carter, moves to middays; current midday man Bill Abbate moves to overnights. The station's program director, Oedipus, likens the new lineup to the Red Sox already having Nomar Garciaparra and then signing Manny Ramirez. Like Stern, Opie and Anthony, who first came to notoriety on WAAF-FM, structure many of their bits around sex talk and guy-humor. Opie and Anthony's signature gimmick is a long-running campaign to encourage women to flash their breasts. Critics call their free-wheeling show low-rent and low-brow. Opie and Anthony just laugh and yuk it up. ''They're phenomenal talents,'' said Oedipus. ''They've been out of the market for three years and people in Boston don't know how good they have become. People will be outraged, shocked, and amused.'' After leaving Boston, Opie and Anthony rebuilt their careers in New York. In June, they signed a lucrative deal with Infinity Broadcasting, a division of the CBS-owned Viacom. The deal will eventually put the duo in 22 US markets, nine of the top 10. A sticking point in the deal was that Opie and Anthony appear in live time, not on a tape delay. (Stern started on WBCN at night on tape delay.) If WBCN, which is owned by Infinity, had passed on Opie and Anthony, the show would have been offered to another Boston outlet - and likely snapped up in a heartbeat. This would have put Infinity in the highly awkward position of competing against itself for the same demographic. Oedipus spent weeks weighing the decision. Opie and Anthony - one-time nemeses of WBCN when they worked for WAAF - knocked him on the air for dragging his feet. ''Any dissing was merely posturing,'' Oedipus said yesterday. ''They understand the nature of it.'' Adding Opie and Anthony to the mix will reduce the amount of music played during WBCN's day. But Oedipus said the station would make up for it at other times. ''The one thing we'll do is play more new music during all the other hours,'' said Oedipus. ''And we're reducing the commercial load in all the rest of the day parts so we can play more music.'' The WBCN program director said he expects record labels to take a ''wait-and-see approach'' to changes at the station. ''They will see very quickly that what's important to them, mainly spins, will not decrease and in some cases will increase,'' he said.
