I am interested in starting my own O & A ftp.
But I have a few questions. I have a piece of
shit iMac with a 6 Gig hard drive. If I run an FTP
do I have to physically have the files on my
hard drive, or are the stored on the internet,
like with MySpace.com or Idrive? If they have to
be stored on the computer, I will have to wait
until I get my new computer in a few weeks. I
am only planning on mirroring another well
known FTP to make quicker connections for
everyone. Also, I am on a cable modem from
Adelphia which can suck ass sometimes, but
I am hoping that it won't affect the connection
speeds too much. Anyway, if someone got
back to me on that it would be great. I am
definitely NOT going to dick around and just try
to up all of the existing files. I have been a
user of a different FTP for a while, and just
figured it might make it easier on him...

Hmmm... where to start?
That's a lot to cover in one post.

1. Yes, you can run it from your "piece of
shit iMac with a 6 Gig hard drive". I would not reccomend this for severeral reasons. The first being that you are obviously new to hosting an FTP and you'll be opening up your server to people who mostly all have only the best intensions but some who will F your A with a giant C.

2. Yes, you can use "the internet, like with MySpace.com or Idrive". Not neccessarily those in particular but, there is an entire industry based on providing online storage. Much safer from your perspective because users will only have access to files on that server and not your life's work but, it comes with a cost. These services aren't typically free.

3. Cable modem "shouldn't" be a problem. As long as you keep access under control. Check with that other FTP you spoke of for specifics.

4. You said "I am definitely NOT going to dick around and just try to up all of the existing files". You can say that all you want. It doesn't really make it so. It sure sounds like you're looking for an easy way to get us to do the leg work for your O&A collection. I hope that isn't the case but, time will tell.

Also, we've been through all this before and the general feeling, in this group anyway, was that we're all pretty happy with what we've got. Unless you're offering something different and/or better no one seems too interested in uploading all their stuff twice.

Good Luck. I sure hope it works out for ya. Keep us posted on your progress.

If you are guys are happy with the one FTP,
that's fine, I am not one to screw up a good
thing. But I am not asking anyone to do any leg
work for me. I had some basic questions
about how to set it up. I wouldn't ask anyone to
upload any of the shows, I could do that all
myself because I have access to the other
one. I was just thinking a few more people
may be able to gain access if there was more
than one server. If you are still interested at all,
write me back, but if not, that's cool too.
Thanks for the intro help, anyway.

Yet another FTP? sounds good to me. Thanx for the offer! Let's hope this one is actually a sincere offer.

I have to say, alot of people were right about the last FTP mess we had. If i just learn how to not trust people so easily, i wouldn't have wasted my time uploading to a newbie's FTP for nothing. So all i'm going do is sit back and see what happens with this attempt. If the general response is good, i'll jump on the bandwagon. If not, no lost to me.

As for now, mulligan's non-existant FTP is good enough to hold everyone over.

I'm legally blind so I couldn't see the mods telling me TO SHRINK MY SIG'S FILE SIZE TO UNDER 30KB.

Why don't you just sign up for an account of MySpace.com and give people the password and login so they can get it from there, less harm done to the machine and not easy for narcs to catch.

FTP....what's an FTP? Do I know you? Are you currently employed by Infinity Broadcasting or the FBI?

If I had an FTP site I would not mind someone setting up a mirror. I do not know how to do that or what is involved so don't ask me!! I believe all you need to set up a mirror account is access to the FTP (You already have that) so the rest of the work needs to be done by researching how to do this. You may want to contact JohnSlack (Barch - I can't believe I just said that) and ask him what to do. He has a piece of shit MAC and once offered to set up a mirror to the FTP site before it was shut down.

I've decided I am going to go with Hotline.
Right now, the server is in a VERY preliminary
mode, but I want to test the speed. I won't
officially be able to have it running until I get
my new computer. When that happens I will
run the server off of my old computer. But for
now, will someone who I will recognize from
the board email me at
evanlambert2@yahoo.com
and request a login and password.
Remember, you need Hotline Client first. If
that is a pain in the ass, I don't know what to
tell you.
