I'm a li'l suprised that nobody here has commented on the recently reported media streaming issues. That is, that the US Copywrite Office has bent over to accommodate the RIAA, re-mapping on-line royalty rates. Sites that stream content will now have to pay $.014 per song streamed, while FM broadcasters that stream content will have a royalty rate of $.007, the same rate for
traditional broadcast methods.

But wait. Since streaming allows cookies to count listeners, those rates are PER LISTENER. It's believed that Live365.com has about 2 million unique users per month. These rates will result in about $150,000 dollars in new fees per month. In other words, a lot of streaming stations are going to be out of business. That'll generate a lot of cash for the labels, no doubt.

Additionally, stations have quite a lot of information to gather and report, including the unique user ID for each listener. Now why would the RIAA want that? We don't just want to know how many people heard this song, we want to know who they are. Creepy.

Oh. One more thing. This is all retroactive to 1998.

What does it all mean? Well, the RIAA has cooked up one big shit sammich and everybody's gotta take a bite.

Coffee break's over, back on your heads.

I've only skimmed the second link listed... " Broadcasters Outraged over Proposed Reporting Rules Tuesday February 19, 2002 "

..and I must say I dont really know half the information they're talking about -- logging and catalogging ...If this goes through .. I think its going to put a lot of amateur broadcasters out of business (in my case this isn't a job.. yet a fun lil hobby)

Doesn't really surprise me that all this is happening... Only was a matter a time before some rich big wig realized.. "hey.. we could be making a boat load of money off this.."

On behalf of Syndication Underground, I'd like to say "Good Bye, ElRayoX".

but, seriously... Who didn't see this comming? We were all distracted for a while by the excitement lars created around napster. The whole fucking industry is overflowing with whinny litte ass fucker bitches like that fucking douchebag lars. And, the ones that aren't, are the old greedy ass fucking bitches that own everything already.

Conventional mainstream radio will always suck big sweaty balls because there is so much money to be made. So, attempts will always be made to circumvent the establishment. Never in the past have these efforts caused any long-term change. They either get squashed out by the bitch ass fucking bitches or they succumb to greed and become absorbed into the very thing they opposed.

Anyway, it's really nothing new. I hope we can keep things running in, at least, a similar fashion but, if not... we'll adapt, we'll improvise, WE WILL OVERCOME.

So fuck off all you "glass half empty" people.

btw… I haven’t read any of that stuff yet. So, I may be back to edit all of this in a few minutes. :D

I would not worry at all about this - The simple old argument of if I buy a cd and listen to it in my car do I have to pay the artist every time I listen to it? Even further, will I have to pay additional if I have friends in the car.

When you go to a bar and someone plays the Jukebox does the bar charge everyone in the place .07 for royalties?

There would be no way to enforce this as the internet is a non-regulated entity.

This is just another bureaucratic cluster fuck that will take years to resolve.

Geez, it could take forever to figure out how many songs are on the SU feeds. I'll check, but I'm pretty sure my feed hasn't played one damn song.

The RIAA was in an uproar and got Napster "shut down" last year. I guess we'll never be able to get MP3s over the Internet. Peer to peer sharing was released before the injuction was lifted in the Napster suit.

Wish there was another service that could be used to broadcast that didn't have a central server. Hey Av8er or Impact, have you heard of such a thing?

BTW, if such a service did exist, I was able to finally get my feed to run on it. Thanks for the help.

As long as O&A (and R&F) can't be heard EVERYWHERE, somebody on this board will figure a way to keep the streams going.

As for paying royalties: we have Officer Barch to make sure we follow the law to the letter (that old gag).

ChuckRadio plays music up until 3pm Weekdays.. I dont think its a question as much as the SU feeds playing music .. but the tools we use to broadcast over the internet are being compromised with all this royality crap going into effect.. (ie, shoutcast, oddcast, )

A friend let me copy all 12 gig of her mp3 collection (at the time) ... that's when I realized "hey.. I could run a radio station" It wasnt til after that when it dawned on me .. what's stopping me from broadcasting WNEW ... alas .. the musical format has stayed ..

Someone thought this topic was so important that they wrote a letter to Representative John LaFalce, a Democrat from New York, which includes Niagra and Orleans counties, and the northwest portion of Erie county and the western portion of Monroe county.

Thanks for the link Scott, that was a very interesting read. The royalties that these independent broadcasters would be forced to pay, is really what stood out to me.

Bravo to the person who wrote that!
