I'm posting this for a few reasons but mostly because I understand the frustration that everyone is going through with the Live 365 service. So if you guys out there are looking for an alternative I am willing to create a step-by-step document on how to host your own live feed and re-broadcast to everyone using Microsoft Media encoder 7 (Free Software no additional $ to spend). If enough of you are interested in doing this and meet the requirements below I am willing to spend the time on creating the documentation and provide SOME support to you. Let me know how you feel about it.

I used to host my own feed but I moved to Washington D.C. Last September and can no longer host one but I want to do my part by helping those who can.

Requirements:

- Have a DSL/Cable feed (or Faster)

- Pentium III 450 MHz processor or faster

- Windows 2000

- 256 MB of RAM

- Supported audio capture device (live radio feed)

- Intermediate to Advanced knowledge of Windows 2000 (server preferred)

- you can follow instructions ;-)

- Willing to do your part in making Syndication Underground Stronger then ever!!!!

barch,

LMFAO you maybe the only one who caught onto my edit there. I'm sure she is cute, but I wasn't sure if I wasn't clear with my role in this or something else ;).

Thanks,

I'm all for helping out with SU (and not looking for a war here) but your requirements are kind of off. I gurantee a cable modem won't be able to handle the demands of 100+ users like chuck used to get all the time. Also, you don't need Win2K (or server)...just winamp, a codec, and shoutcast :)

Running a direct feed is good for a few people...if some of your friends at work want OnA for example...but having your IP directly available to everyone would be bad, very bad. Lawyers wouldn't send letters to live365.com to shut down feeds, they'd send you and your ISP letters. I'd prefer /not/ to get any letters from lawyers :)

I would like to suggest to all feeders...Try the BEOS. There is a free app called Soundplay that can stream way more than one feed at a time. The OS is available for free at www.be.com. This os rocks..I run 3 streams off of one box and it is rock_solid. My uptime is over 2 monthes and counting. If you are a serious media guy this os is big_time. It rocks way harder than MAC/OS and way easier to learn and use than Linnux. It uses a gui and a command_line interface at the same time. Very powerfull. This is the best streaming tool ever. Any no money goes to M$

Ahhhhhh...techie debate :( and i thouht i left work an hour ago!

The major problem is trying put fit 100+ feeds over a cable modem - they're not designed to do that. Max sustainable data rate is 3mpbs - and that's only if everything is working perfectly. I love my cable modem, but it's no T1 :)

On a side note, my Win2K Pro box that i serve the feed from only gets rebooted if I have to 'fix' live365 - other than that, it's stable for months at a time :) MS actually did something right with W2K...

ok, now i've paid my dues...bring on the boobs!

p.s. I've seen BE - cool OS, but it's still linux!

Feed me!

If you think it's so great, put up an O&A feed. We'll let you know if it's as wonderful as you say.

My point was just that you can stream a lot more feeds via BeOS. Yes...you still have to relay through 365 but...you can have more than one or two streams running. I have 3 streams running from by BeBox(2 PII300) and relayed through 365. I can run about 6 different feeds off the box without maxing the procs. Granted...there is not enough bandwidth to serve tons of clients but thats where the 365 relay comes in. Whatever...just a thought.

I would be feeding o and a but i live in Colorado and can't find a powerfull enough antenna to get WNEW from 1800 miles away. If someone wants me to relay a feed...i would be happy to.

OK...so i can't run a live feed but would be more than willing to run a 'best of' feed. If anyone has content to offer...i would love to serve it. I know rotty was running a best of for a while... i have hd space and bandwidth to spare so...show me the content....
