Not sure if this is on topic, but I've been taping the O&A show on my PC. At first I was using an external radio connected to the sound card, but I decided to go high tech and buy a D-Link external USB FM radio (it looks like a little pod with an antenna on top of it, DSB-R100 $24+). You can tune it through your PC (via USB), and it has a mini earphone jack that connects into the sound card.

I found a piece of software that works great to schedule recording. It's called Radiator, and you can get it at http://flesko.cz . You can use any Codec on your machine to record, and pick any quality. (If you use the D-Link FM radio, make sure to download the new drivers from flesko.cz , since the drivers that came with the unit don't work with Radiator).

I was not getting very good reception (both the radio and the D-link unit, due to the proximity to the computer, I guess). I decided to use my old amplified FM antenna (I used to use it for my stereo way back when). I had to fashion a cable (the D-Link unit uses an RCA input for the antenna, the FM amplifier uses a coax-type output), but the reception had greatly improved. I'm sure you can pick up one of these amplifiers at a stereo store (mine was $30 10 years ago). Some of them look like little pyramids...

I run a line from my earphone jack to my stereo to the mic jack on my computer. Then I use total recorder to record the show. With total recorder you can record the shows at any codec and it has a sheduler also. I then relay the mic thru live365.com's studio program, and run a feed out.
Usually the file size of the shows comes to about 23 megs in wav. format. (GSM 6.10 codec). But since I want to replay the show, I need to record it in mp3 format. So now the file size is about 48 megs. Thank god for Cd burners.

More feeds are more gooder!

Sblueman, thanks for the Codec suggestion. I will try it. What settings are you using / how good are the results??

When I record with the MPEG Codec, the 4 hours come out to about 100 MB. If I use lower settings, the show sounds like crap...

I record at 24kBit/s, 22,050 Hz (mono) when I record in mp3 format. At this format the file is around 44 Megs. I use this format for my replay on the feed, and it sounds good. Then when I want to save them on a CD, I convert them to GSM 6.10 8,000 Hz wav.format. This ends up being about 23 Megs per file. You should get the blade.dll or lame.dll files and set up total recorder to use them so the files can be compressed smaller. Oh.....and Barch....the reason the person said this was off topic was because it was posted in general discussion. I guess someone moved it here.

Thanks, Sblueman. I did some experimenting over the weekend, and I'm sticking with Radiator. I tried the GSM codec, but, being a snob, the quality is a bit low. I've decided to go with the MPEG-3 codec, at 96kbps, 44 khz. I also had to get a new MP3 player for my HP Jornada (Xaudio works best, easiest to scroll through the file, nice big time display). I am getting a 256 MB CF card, and I'm all set.

Thanks.

how large are the files when you use radiator?

The files recorded at 96 kbps end up around 175 MB per show. If you use Radiator with the GSM codec, the files should be exactly the same length as they are when you use Total Recorder.
