O&A will be ten years older, as will all of us. Since much of their show is derived from fan participation, I don't think they'll be doing the same stuff as they are today.

Opie once referred to Don & Mike as them in ten years, but don't get scared... D&M have their audience, and most of it might have been something else a decade ago, like we are now.

I'd say the O&A Army would all be Colonels and Generals, and some new flavor of talk show hosts (Ron & Fez, even though their older?) might be pulling the big daypart numbers.

One thing is certain: O&A won't be doing any Saturday night bowling alley promotions- one would shoot the other in the head if it came to that.

By then, Stern will threaten retirement and Mel will finally call his bluff, so who knows? Mornings? Hmmm, hoo hoo hoo...

Howie, on the other hand, now an "insider" who gets to eat Giant King Crab with Mel while Ant eats Rice Krispie Snacks, still refuses to recognize O&A's talents.

That's cuz there's no talent to recognize. How would you feel if you created a show and then heard all your ideas poorly imitated by Opie and Anthony, along with a bunch of garden-variety wannabes? Why should he give them any respect? He gave them a show to do and they suck at it.

how do you think o&a feel with everyone taking WOW and fu friday?? shit happens, and radio is a really small industry, so people are going to take/borrow, and usually embellish other people's ideas. however, people move on, and new ideas are made. in the case with howard, he just harps on how everyone ripped him off, but he hasn't come up with anything new in years.

CT,
I wouldn't even dignify his comment with the FU Friday and WOW comparison. Those are recognizable bits that O&A have "documented" as being copied.
Stern thinks anyone who talks on the radio copies him. I have yet to hear Stern find anything that O&A Copy.
What he seems to be worried about is O&A's "shock" radio is better than his.

It's bad enough that Stern stole the boxing match idea from Ron & Fez. But Stern never does give any evidence to what he says is people ripping him off. He should be happy being the "name" in talk radio, and not bitching about people also doing talk radio.

I got a question, Joey...
Yur 15 minutes of fame are almost up. Are you gonna call Howard for another date with a porno star because you can't get a date?

Actually, the shows are very similar. Howard came first, that's about the only difference. I'm not saying O&A are imitators. Someone had to come first. But Stern was their immediate predecessor and probably a big influence. And about their development, like Howard they have stopped playing music, and are amassing a group of famous friends. Today its Jay Mohr, tomorrow its Conan O'Brien, etc. etc. In the future they will know a lot more famous people, probably get to be friends with them, and that would be a very normal pattern of growth.

So to all Stern bashers, I say grow up. Stern's show is good. O&A is good too (they have greatly improved since they left Boston). And there is room enough for more than one of these shows. Just because they quibble doesn't mean we outsiders should forget they are the only two shows on radio worth listening to.

Dolomite,
I'll assume you are legit.
If you are, you can go back and search archives here for several posts which point out that Stern was not the originator of the type of show (fandick had some particularly good posts).
O&A have said numerous times that Howard was an influence, the way Eric Clapton was influenced by earlier blues guitarists. Howard stopping playing music wasn't only his idea - there are hundred's of talk only shows out there. When Howie started he was on WNBC where they played all sorts of lame music, do traffic reports, news, etc. As his influence and power grew, he was able to get program directors to back off when he wanted to talk only and break format. Where Stern was most influential is showing those in the business side of radio that this type of show can be syndicated, and that there are some talents out there who could be successful doing things a different way. That in no way diminishes the Talent of O&A.

hey pd, what's going on??

that wasn't o&a's idea completely, the entire station changed format. it happens all the time in radio. in all the markets that o&a were syndicated, they're playing howard in the morning, i think d&m middays, and o&a in afternoons. ALL BUT NY . that's cuz howard doesn't want them on the same station. he's scared !!
howard took many ideas from imus, and made them great, and o&a have taken ideas from howard and made them great. that's the way it is. in 10 years from now, someone will come around, and take o&a's ideas, and do something great too. but i'm sure howie will still be crying.

CT,
It may be a chicken & egg thing, but O&A were brought in before the format change.

Historically, Howard wanted to program his stations. When 92.3 was playing classic rock, he had mentioned that he could pick jocks playing more modern rock after him. He had no intention of putting other talk shows on the same station as him.
O&A were brought in with the idea to gut WNEW and try something different. Infinity realized that the wild talk was a good format. It is no coincidence that they were put on in afternoon and the weakest show was always the morning show, one that wouldn't compete with Stern. This is possible because Infinity has more than 2 stations in town. Other Markets don't necessarily have 2 infinity stations, plus Stern doesn't have as much direct input. Notice that all of the syndication came only when O&A's contract was up. So it wasn't only the format change; otherwise Howard & O&A would be on same station here.

I didn't mean to put too much emphasis on the lack of music, except to say that O&A didn't want some idiot PD telling them what music to play on their show (which they DID have to put up with in the beginning at WNEW)
