Ikea, very good points. But I shall point this out.
Lenny Bruce encouraged others to push the boundaries like he did, Howard tried to hush others.

Yea, its a funny subject. Never in entertainment have I heard an arguement like this. Usually people THANK their inspirations. Howard took it to its current level and form, but he WAS inspired by others. Not just Imus. Thats how you GET your own thing going. Influence from here, influence from there, then your own little contributions. Sure, there would be no O&A without Howard, but there would've been no Howard withou Imus, Muni, in some ways Steve Dahl, and probably others we don't even know about.

Nothing wrong with a little heated discussion. I m interested in knowing more abouut Stern and O&A's contract disputes, and limitations on references to one another.

I'll admit, Howard doesn't embody the same spirit as Lenny bruce. Then again, Lenny never lived to see the comedians which wer inspired by him. I dunno how he would have reacted.

WOW, the's is(C'mon, I know someone will point it out, hahahaha) a lot of stupid post in this thread. Matter of fact, I could only read half way threw page one before I just went to the "post reply" button. I just have a few(C'mon people) points to make...
1. I rule
2. Imus never had naked women on his show, never but that's nor here or there. O&A are funny, so is Stern, the difference? Howard Stern is "shock jock" radio, 20 years from now o&a will be forgotten while Stern will be known as the founder of "shock radio," like it or not, you can't deny it!!!

BTW, I love you all and wish to have your baby.
The end!!!

Lenny Bruce-free speech, pushing the boundaries
Imus-political and social satire and parody
Muni-naked women and strippers
Dahl-lesbians and dial-a-date, putting his family on the air.
Ste-uninformed, biased, brainwashed, jackass!

Remember in early October when I warned all of you that Ste would infect this board with his Stern propaganda? Look up the title "Ste, follow me" in FC.

FANDICK, my have you grown. I remember when you were just a D&M tool, now you've made some really good arguments. I didn't think you'd make it past "D&M and O&A fans, can't we all just get along?" Congrats, bro.

And Ste, who gives a fuck about TimJ??? That's the same guy who thought O&A were buddy-buddy with some wacky zoo show in Louisiana.

*EDIT* Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but until I came here, I had no fucking clue who Lenny Bruce was. I can't tell you one bit he does. TV stars live forever. Movie Stars live forever. Recording stars live forever. Radio personalities are obsolete scum. O&A are the best thing in radio, but that says cock because radio is a novelty at best. As I type this, in November of 2001, O&A are the best thing in radio. In December of 2001, that could all change. O&A have made me laugh harder than anything in a long time, but who is loyal to a radio show? (Except some of the zealots we find on this hallowed board) Honestly, you people talk about radio as if it were admired by millions and how your favorite hosts have the cure for cancer and secrets to world peace and meaning of life, but anyone you favorite host doesn't like is the worst product of creation and must be destroyed at all costs. Radio is fun when you're driving home or have nothing better to do, but it shouldn't be your primary source of entertainment in the year 2001. O&A realize they shouldn't be celebrities, why dont' you???

Howard doesn't mainly try to shock people- he tries to do a show that's interesting and honest. Opie and Anthony want to be like him, but they don't realize there's more to it than just saying penis and vagina and hooting and laughing. That's why they're show's not funny, and that's why they'll never have broad success.

Dragons,
Lenny Bruce has been the subject of several books and a documentary or two. Even I'm too young to remember Lenny Bruce when he was doing his stuff. Towards the end of his life (after being arrested) he seemed more preoccupied with Freedom of Speech, and less interested in actually being funny. Stern obviously was influenced, and had Bruce's mother on several times (Sally Mar I believe is her name).

Pure speculation, but I'd think Bruce would be happy to see the envelope pushed to where it is today, and would have been honored to have people influenced by him.

Thanks Dragons, but I was never a D&M fan. I've only heard them a couple of times. You must be thinking of someone else.

Ste, the point is that everyone has influences, people who inspire them. What people who know about Howard and both shows is that WE will remember him like you will, but we'll also remember how he turned into what he used to hate. A big pussy, Hollywood, hypocrite. Sure, he's still funny just being himself, but his show is NOTHING what it used to be. And Dahl, Muni and Imus ALL came before Howard, and ALL did the things I said they did. As far as Steve Dahl, he and Howard worked at the same station in Detroit. Howard went to Washington, and Dahl went to Chicago. I, along with a lot of other mid western people thought Dahl was the first pioneer of this format. I've been deprogrammed of the radio lies more than a couple of times and I can tell you, O&A are the real deal, I assure you. They've given Howard, as well as all the others I mentioned their due credit. Something Howard is unable to do. And you must not listen that much or you would be able to tell the difference. There ARE Howard clones out there, but these two aren't.

You know nothing about radio because you only know what Howard tells you.

Now go piss up a flagpole, you little geek.

Lenny Bruce may have broken down a lot of barriers, but if you're going to use a reference to a freedom of speech comic, why not Carlin? I think he's a little more mainstream.

Radio is such a forgettable medium. Do you think people will be listening to classic O&A when there are flying cars? NO. For the same reason they won't be listening to classic Casey Kasem, Scott Muni, Howard Stern, or Steve Dahl. Radio is like the government of Italy. They are constantly knocking each other off the pedestal and few leaders are memorable.

I say enjoy O&A, Stern, etc. while they last because they won't be around forever. I know I will. It's fun, but another guy will be around soon enough. Stern was lucky enough to ride a wave of a liberal nation when the national media become more free to say what it felt.

I would like for someone to determine the bloodline for this sort of humor, pioneered by Lenny Bruce, taken up by Carlin, Pryor, Stern, Murphy and Hicks, and continued today by several others including O&A.

But who came before Bruce? And who are the DIRECT, and INDIRECT descendents? I definitely sense Bruce's riffing in Stern's show, at least during the good segments (not the "show me your tits" stuff).

PS -- O&A will become more famous, and they will amass increasingly famous friends and acquaintances. Some people here bash Stern for having famous friends, but that's what happens when you climb the ladder in the entertainment industry!

DOUBLE PS -- I was hooked by Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Brothers, Final Fantasy and Mega Man II.

i beg to differ, i think in 5 years from now everyone will know the truth about stern, and everyone that he took his ideas from. had he bailed out while he was on top, then you would be right. but stern is nothing more than a has been, he's lost his game. it's over.

I rely on facts, dates, and people who were there when it happened. He was NOT first. And its YOUR mind that tells YOU things, you idiot. Things that you hope are true but aren't. You provide no basis of fact for your arguement. Just, "Stern was first! Stern was first! 20 years from now... 20 years from now..." Who gives a shit about 20 years from now? Do you keep saying that for something to look forward to? Is it because Howard's show is out of gas and you know it? Do you hope people will forget how much of a pussy he's become. How he tries to have his enemies silenced instead of fighting them with talent on the air? Its today assface! And if thats your only crutch, you're more crippled than I thought. 20 years from now, I'll remember that you were the emptiest head I'd ever encountered.

Oh, and thanks for letting me live, you comedic genius, you.

Hey, guys - let's keep it simple for these nimrods.

Gag order = no real talent anymore

There's nothing sadder than saying that. I never thought that we would bear witness to Imus, Jr. - I guess Don has been praying for ratings cancer on Howard, too.

Hey - what happened to the Stern Fan Network, anyway...?

Bwah hahahahaha!

That little girl had knockers!!!
