| Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01  | Dear "Don," I am writing in response to an on-air rant you made about Opie & Anthony on Friday, April 26, 2002. You and Mike decided to discuss the lack of "team spirit" between your show and "The Opie & Anthony Show" on WNEW. Both of you attempted to take the high road and complain that the on-air talent at WNEW, specifically O&A, refused to enter into such a gentelmen's agreement. Well, isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? This issue is a little larger than a single story in the Washington Post. This rift between the shows existed for reasons much larger than the fact that Opie was upset for you being misquoted. When your show first came to New York, O&A welcomed the two of you with open arms. In the months that followed, it became very apparent that you and Mike wanted the afternoon drive slot, which O&A occupied, as your own. Understanding this is when your show is on in Washington, DC, this seems natural. But, how can anyone talk about "teamwork" when the base reason for your syndication to 'NEW is to usurp O&A's time slot? This is evidenced in your building frustration with O&A for exposing the machinations of your show for what they were: a ploy to get syndicated in your normal time slot to a station that already had a successful afternoon drive team (and, judging by Infinity's option to move you to midday and keep O&A where they are, a show considered more successful than yours). I have this to say: How dare you, sir?! I normally cannot listen to your show, because I know what it is like to get screwed over by an ambitious co-worker. It is too bad, because during the times I used to listen, you guys were not bad. Like O&A described you, the two of you were like them, only about a decade older. I doubt there will be a truce. The main battle--for the afternoon drive slot--has been decided. I understand you would like to call a truce now, but the fact is that the O&A ALWAYS WIN IN THE END rule has been enacted, and your fate has been sealed. Things move very quickly here in New York, Mr. "Geronimo," and despite your deprecation of the O&A faithful, we are smart enough to see through your ruse. Opie pulled the curtain back a little bit, and you verified everything with your defensive rants like the one on April 26th. I think you should take another bit as evidence of the difference between your fine little radio show and the virus called O&A that is spreading across the nation: When you appear somewhere, dozens show up; when O&A appear somewhere, THOUSANDS show up, and thousands more are turned away at the door. It is too bad, because you and Mike could have been better friends to O&A and rode their coattails for a while. And, to be honest, the boys have gone lightly on you; they have yet to truly release the O&A Army, and if they do, consider yourselves finished. Seventeen years in the business will mean very little. That is what Opie has to fire back with: the fact that Don wants to be live in NYC by crawling over the corpses of O&A. I stink? How can a dedicated D&M fan use a Nortonism? You should have called me a "DA." Either way, you'er out of your depth, so please die. Don thought he could fuck with O&A because he's been on for nearly 20 years. They wanted Opie and Anthony time slot, but it wasn't cause they have this long hatred of O an A. Thats the problem with fanatics of this show, Sterns show, or anything similar: you take your heroes' words as fact. Youre not around to see whats going on, so its stupid to speak as if you are. Back to Ben Stein's son: I would be interested in reading something salient here, so stop antagonizing and make some sort of point. Don & Mike have their moments, but I personally find Opie & Anthony much funnier. Perhaps that is because I am more familiar with them and [Regan] this one is ... different [/Regan]. As mentioned before, I think it is very hypocritical to claim O&A do not want to be D&M's "teammates" while this whole conflict arose because of a ruse by Don & Mike. I think my point has been made-a few times. And, if you want, I'll fill in your response: F, you suck, because I, Rob Stein, say so. Is that about accurate? I don't know how much resentment Don and Mike feel about switching timeslots. It did get them a good pay check and two new top 10 markets.
