Granted, they may keep track of your time between tolls and give you tickets. I've never seen it, though. And I've averaged 85 (with times of 95) on the Turnpike and never gotten a ticket....

But it's a hell of a lot easier to drive through without stopping than to STOP.... and it works everywhere in the area...

I forgot the best thing about EZ Pass, you can go to AC lose every dime you have and still be able to get home on the parkway because you don't need money.

Urban Legend... you never got one, no one you know ever got one. If they say they did, they're lying to you.

EZ-Pass has no jurisdiction to enforce NJ speed limits. If anyone gets or has gotten a ticket in the mail it wasn't from EZ-Pass.

If I'm wrong and you or someone you know has received a speeding ticket from EZ-Pass please tell me so. I'd love to hear all about it. Also, please post a scan of the ticket. (you can blur your personal info)

Who stops?

Edit: Before all you idiots start posting your stories about getting "fines" from EZ-Pass for going through the toll plaza too fast maybe I should clear something up. There is a HUGE difference between an "EZ-Pass Fine" and a "ticket". What you got from EZ-Pass is a fine that you are NOT required to pay. Sure, you gotta pay it if you want to keep using EZ-Pass but, it's not like you're gonna go to jail or even lose your license if you don't pay. But, it really doesn't matter. You payed it whether you wanted to or not before you even got the pretty picture of your license plate in the mail.

Okay, you don't stop, but you can't exactly pull a Men In Black either. EZ-Pass speed is 15, usually I do 25, and I've heard that you can even go as high as 45. :)

Oh, and one thing I forgot earlier.... if you're so worried about EZ-Pass billing you properly, you can check your balance and any tolls you've charged AT ANY TIME online. As far as charging your credit card, you have a set "replenish amount". When your account goes under $10, it replenishes the amount you set, I think the minimum is $25.

There's a post on RF.net here about the ticketing. But if you're going to pass it off as "urban legend" you probably won't believe it anyway.

And no, the ticket would not come FROM EZ-Pass. NJ State Police can, if they want, look up EZ-Pass records, I'm sure. They see the time it took you to travel between two EZ-Pass points, and they know exactly how many miles it is between those points. With those two pieces of info, it's EASY to tell exactly what your average speed was between those two points.

But apart from the tickets, there really is no GOOD reason NOT to get EZ-Pass. Just quit your fucking whining and get it. You can sign up online.

OK, I've got a couple of problems with this:

1. How credible a source is "Big Jim". I don't know. I read the R&F board spiratically at best. Maybe he's telling the truth maybe he's full of S. I don't know. This is, however, the internet and, it has long been known to contain at the least 3 or 4 dishonest peole. Maybe he's one of them. Again, I don't know but, he's offering nothing but his word.

2. It happened in NY. I am not at all familiar with NY motor vehicle statutes. I do not know if EZ-Pass operates the same in NY as in NJ.

3. It came from the Ron & Fez board. I mean, come on... can you believe anything you read over there?

But, seriously, the author of this post refers to no specific NY state statute or NY state imposed fine. Merely that "this person" received a "ticket" for going 76mph in a 65 zone. Does NOT say from who. Nor does he/she define "ticket" (refer to my previous statements for relevance).

In addition to my statements thus far, let me also add information I received from the Asbury Park Press. (I'll link the article when I find it online) EZ-Pass has racked up in the neighborhood of $167 million dollars in debt to the garden state parkway in less than one year. They will be contracting a private collection agency to collect on all fines imposed. Who ya think they're expecting to pay that $167 million?

After reviewing this coversation through sober eyes I have come to realise that maybe I was a bit hard on some of you. I appreciate everyone's input. And, appologise if anyone found my statements or responses to be short or less than polite.

I am going to resist this evil white box for as long as I can but, it appears to be unavoidable.

Thank you all.

Oh and, the challenge is still out there... anyone wants to post a "ticket" issued by EZ-Pass... I'd love to see it.

Barch, don't lie down and die so quickly! TOLLS SUCK. THEY ARE EVIL. Plain and simple.

There are so many better ways to pay for the roads than to implement such a silly, expensive system as tolls.

I think you and others should check out a pretty cool website on the topic. Hey, maybe you have to change one mind at a time, but never let the arguments of government bureaucrats win out over common sense!

Thanks Spork.
But, I am already familiar with this group. And, as much as I appreciate their efforts, I really don't have a problem with the "tolls". As I have stated previously, in this very thread, I'd prefer to have the road financed by it's users.

Two words: Gas tax.

That means that old ladies who stay at home and wait to die but never use the roads will never put a penny into them.

There is so much less in the way of overhead for administering the gas tax. You get rid of the fucking toll booths, you get rid of the toll takers and the managers of the toll takers and their managers and so on.

Also, in some small way EVERYONE uses the roads. If you buy something in the supermarket that was trucked in from somewhere you're using the roads, at least indirectly.

It's the same as the people trying to get out of paying school taxes because they don't have kids in school. You might not have kids in school, but it benefits your property value if you live in a well-funded school district, and educated kiddies tend to turn less to the wonderful world of crime to support themselves.

There's a better way than tolls to this, that's all I'm saying.

I dislike EZ pass because it's making paying tolls so "EZ" that people are forgetting about them and how much it's actually costing them.

Tolls are a bitch. It costs you $7 to leave Staten Island. Go fig.

I remember living in NJ having to go through tolls every 4 of 5 miles on the parkway. The turnpike is even worse! I don't understand the thing with the ticket.

One thing if you are ever in Port Jeff, NY you can use your Ez-pass at Mc Donalds now! It's true, its true! At least its good for something else.

I'm going to check this out. Is it the one in the village or on 347?

*edit*
It's the one on Rte. 347. Food was not so great, burgers were warm not hot and the fries were very salty.

well technically, its 7 bucks to come back to the island. leaving it is free

my mom did actually get a ticket for going through the ezpass to fast, but other then that i haven't seen anything bad from it. i just hate the people that actually stop or go like 2 mph when going through it.

Yeah, that sounds pretty good too Spork. I really don't know too much about and major highway that has been funded entirely by a gas tax. I guess it's possible. But, it does kinda smell like government beurocracy.

Just this past summer, when gas went up close to $2 a gallon, that was the first thing everyone suggested. Reducing or eliminating the federal gas tax. I can only imagine the pressure that state and county polititions would face if they had any control over more a localized gas tax.

Not saying it would work. Again, I'm sure it's possible. I just don't think that there is all that much wrong with the current pay as you go system. Tolls on the parkway, *for the most part, are roughly 30 miles apart and charge 35 cents. So, just barely over a penny per mile. For the service that they provide. Seems pretty reasonable to me. The road is, and has been for as long as I can remember, in a perpetual state of repair and improvement. It's always clean. The grass is always mowed.

I really don't have a problem paying the tolls. Matter of fact, I'd like to see them raise the standard toll to a dollar. Would sure cut down on some of the traffic.

*Note: I reallise that the tolls are spaced MUCH closer together as you go northward on the parkway. I am refering to the 40 miles or so that I drive each way daily.

As for Thrillhouse's comments...

I never questioned fines being imposed by EZ-Pass for traveling too quickly through the toll. However, are you sure it was a "ticket" your mother was issued? Wasn't a fine from EZ-Pass and NOT, in fact, a "ticket" issued by some law enforcement agency representing either the parkway or the state of NJ?

If you'll refer to my previous posts, I think I made a pretty clear distinction between the two.

I don't mean to sound abrupt but, this started out as an FU to EZ-Pass for taking away my tokens and, it's gone off on some pretty broad tangents. All very well legitimate tangents but, just trying to steer this thing in one direction for clarity.

i dunno. i never cared enough to look at it closely. the only reason i know it was something from ezpass was because i asked if it was something else.
i wasn't really trying to debate with you on the whole ticket thing just stating what happened. i realize though by how i worded it you can see it that way.
also i do remember from the envelope it was from some company somewhere else, and not new jersey. whatever that means

yeah, that makes sense.

EZ-Pass is a national franchise/conglomerate thing. Pretty sure they use an outside collection agency. Very similar to the way credit cards and hospitals collect debts.

But, make no mistake about it. This is all civil litigation between two pritave parties, you & EZ-Pass.

There is no criminal charge as implied when people (and, I don't mean you specifically but, people in general) say "I know someone that got a 'ticket' from EZ-Pass".

I realize that I've been pretty long winded with some of my statements here. I assure you all that if I could find a more direct route to my point, I'd take it.

I was just thinking...
What does EZ-Pass have to gain by charging anyone with speeding? And, by "charging" I mean issuing a ticket/summons for any NJ motor vehicle statute.

If they were to assume responsibilty for enforcing NJ law, what's in it for them? Any fines levied would be paid to the state. They're just good samaratans? keeping everyone honest?

If they were to forward their timing/distance data to the state police, same thing. What's in it for them? How much would it cost vs. how much they make?

If word ever got out that they were reporting every driver that exceded the speed limit... who in their right mind would continue using EZ-Pass?

And, we're talking about a faceless corporation here. There's a team of lawyers and accountants and anylists making these discisions. It's not like when some idiot flies past your house goin' 50 in a 25 zone and you call the police out of fear for your children's safety. They're out to make money not see to it that everyone gets what they deserve.

Ticket money is money flowing back into the government. Government money can be funneled back out toward the expansion of EZ-Pass.

Perhaps that money can be used to take out 5 toll booths at each plaza, and making those booths into one big 3- or 4-lane EZ-Pass at 45+ mph. The technology is not impossible, cause I've seen it around Chicago with a system called I-Pass. There are I-Pass lanes where you don't have to slow down at all.

So, it could be done. Truth is, you bitch and you bitch and you BITCH and you really have no idea what they've got planned.

But when you're stuck in a 10-car line and I'm blowing by you in the EZ-Pass lane, I will still be laughing at you, as I do every single time. You more than any other, Barch, because you haven't gotten EZ-Pass, not because you don't travel the road enough, but because for you, it's a crusade of principle.
