I came damn close to getting Verizon DSL, and just before they write my order, they tell me that although DSL is in my neighborhood, I can't get it on my phone lines! FU VERIZON!!! By the by, my DirecTV installer gave me a heads up on Satellite Web service . . . anyone more familiar? He said that it runs about $70 per month (a bit steep for someone who can go online at work for free), but if its worth it (speed!speed!speed!), then I'll have to consider it.

ever think about cable? same price as DSL, very stable and reliable, and cheaper than satellite - just something to consider.

Satelite sucks the ping times are horrible. Also if you use DirecPC they will limit your bandwidth if you use it too much. Cable is definitely better try going to covad and seeing what providers are in your area besides verizon. Sometimes they might give you a different answer than Verizon.

I will say this...if you decide to go with Satellite, god forbid, I have heard that going to radio shack and buying one of their pre-configured for satellite compaqs is the best way to go. Apparently configuring an existing pc can be a real bitch.

Price is expensive and I believe you get less than 500kbs down. Not sure about up, but it may be a dial-up connection for up-loading.

The only negative thing (PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong) I can say about cable is that your speeds vary depending upon traffic. Whereas DSL whatever you connect at is your speed for the rest of your time until you disconnect.

I recommend going to dslreports and doing a search for dsl providers in your area.

I've had cable for 6 months now, and have been on at all times - I have yet to notice any variance in speed. Its always fast as hell, and I get sweet ping times in Eliteforce:Holomatch as well as HL:CS. Extremely reliable, and they installed it in one day, a total of about 3 hours (2 guys came at different times, one to run the line, the other to set up my PC.)

I have had Cablevision cable modem service for over a year now with no drop-offs or it getting slower. :)

I stand corrected in regards to cable speeds...

I will say dsl self-install is so freaking easy. If you can plug your phone into the wall then you can set it up. IF you don't know how to install an ethernet card, well that's a whole nother bag of tricks
