Hey guys. Another post from your favorite geek. I'll try to keep the tech talk to a minimum, because I'd really like to get everyone's input here.

Slash and I have been handed the task of coding OA.com. Yeah, yeah, dangerous, I know.

There are things that we'd like to see done to the site. Stuff that will streamline things for everyone. We've got a list, but I know you guys can come up with more. What we've done so far:

  • Fixed "Bit Tits" typo
  • Fixed "Rate This Discussion" button (ToolTip used to say "Delete This Discussion")
  • Fixed blank space issue in HTML code
  • Made it so that when you're not logged in, and go to OA.com/admin, it allows you to log in instead of saying "Invalid Administrator"
  • Added - Admin button next to Profile button in every post, that only admins can see, it will take you directly to that user's admin info
  • 3-page login down to 2 so far
  • Minor, made AIM names in profiles clickable, opens IM to user
  • If you're in Chat, opening an OA profile no longer opens in the small FoundryChat window
  • Admin button at the top of each forum and main index page, takes you to oa.com/controls
  • Copied thread control buttons to top of thread, added admin button there
  • Locked mods out of stuff they don't need (admins only)
  • Admin folder name changed to Controls
  • Easy IMG UBB button.
  • Fixed error on "How to use PseudoHTML" page and added link to it underneath buttons
  • Protection from META tags
  • Topic Title editing
  • Added old smileys

Here's the list of what we have planned:

  • Eliminate 3-page login down to one
  • Eliminate double posting
  • Fix Last Login time to work properly (currently posts only show up new if they've been posted after you logged in)
  • Automatic IP Flag/Alerter that Jeff had thought of, not top prioity
  • Members will be unable to edit their post past 30 mins after posting it
  • If you're not logged in and try to enter BTS, you will get a login prompt instead of an error message.... once a user is logged in, if they're not an admin, they get the error.

    New:

  • Expand Admin search capabilities
  • 25/50/100 Newest Users list
  • More IPs than just last
  • Drop-down after posting

Can you guys think of anything else that should be done, especially stuff that will help the users of the site and not just us? Even if it is just for us, post it here. Make it a Wish List.

And don't worry about the suggestions... you do the suggesting, Slash and I will figure out how to get it done... hehe...

All sound good to me except...

That is so bitch. I can probably think of a million situations in which that would be a pain in the ass.

  • Posting picture threads (ala moron, myself, etc)
  • Important news threads which need changing.
  • Broken links, etc.

Quick thought edit- This will result in mods having to edit every goddamn thread and post. While most requests to edit things might be pointless, there will probably be a lot of them.

First off, my hat's off to FTL & SLASH for taking on this project...

Thanks for what you've done thus far... I noticed the "Big Tit's" link fixed when I first signed on today...

as far as what you've got planned...
quote:

Eliminate 3-page login down to one
YES!!!
quote:

Admin button next to Profile button in every post, that only admins can see, it will take you directly to that user's admin info
Yes, oh... Yes... Please.... that would rock!!!
quote:

Members will be unable to edit their post past 30 mins after posting it
As long as we can still do it...
quote:

Make it so that when you're not logged in, and go to OA.com/admin, it allows you to log in instead of saying "Invalid Administrator"
God, I hate that...

OK...now what I've thought up...not that they are of any great significance, but they are things I've wished I had at one time or another.

  • It'd be nice if we (mods & admins) could be Logged-In invisible.
  • list the page numbers (of individual thread) next to thread title (or under it) so you can skip to the last page without having to view the first page & having to wait for it to load {sometimes even takes a while with cable modem} before you can click the last page.
  • can you add a pull down window that appears on the page after you post.(the same window that appears at the bottom of every other forum or thread with all forum choices listed) As it stands now, your options are only "Back to discussion", to return to the forum that thread was in (link at top), or to click on the OA.com banner which brings you to the main page viewing all the froums.

  • ok... I just remembered this one... is there a way we (mods & admins) don't get logged out after 10 or 15 minutes... at least when we're in BTS

I don't know about this idea - what would it be useful for? Shouldn't people know who's around?

I always did like this, makes boards much easier to use.

Not a bad idea, should be doable.

Also good, and actually to take it one step further, maybe extend logins all around. At least to 30 mins.

Of course, all suggestions kinda have to be approved by the King Shit.. :)

Oh hey, what would you guys think of bringing back ALL the Infopop smileys?

I bow down to you two, you pretty much said it all.

Only thing that a lot of people ask me is help with linking pictures. Meaning when you hit reply the "OpieAnthony.Com Quick HTML" Menu with all the buttons for smiles, bold, etc. I think using a javascript prompt you can have the person click the "img" button then have a prompt pop up where they enter the URL of the pic and then click ok and the URL gets insterted in the string of the html.

Other than that let's start off bit by bit, don't look at the whole picture now cause it is overwhelming, just one piece at a time. Any help from me please just ask.

If you post a thread, would it be possible to edit the name of the thread? I've seen cases where a thread was either mispelled, or they tried to use a HTML tag in the title without knowing HTML is not enabled in that particular section. I know it's a little thing, but sometimes people tend to pay more attention to a typo in the discussion title than the actual discussion topic, and that can be annoying as hell.

Also, is it possible to disable certain HTML tags? Even though it was INTENSLY humourous when Kid Hijacked Maynards thread with a HTML re-direct, that simply wont be the case if everyone learns that trick and people got re-directed everywhere.

[EDIT]- WE NEED A FLOODCHECK!!!! Can you make it so you cant post more than twice in a certain amount of time, say 45 seconds-1 minute? This will prevent all the mindless drones from posting every brainfart they have.

I have spoken to FTL today about most of these.

I love the idea of the pull down menu to navigate between forums.

I don't really like the invisible idea, I don't really see the point, and I think it's important that the members see that the mods are around.

I spoke to Jeff about the session time, we can't edit that for just mods & admins without changing it across the whole site. But the longer we make the session time, the slower the server will get with idle log-ins.

And editing thread titles would be a huge plus.

It all sounds great...I wish I had more time to look it over, but it seems that it's well in hand. Anything that blocks IP addresses permenently is a huge plus. This keeps the constant offenders out...or at least makes it more difficult.

Well, I think we should have it be some sort of flag or automatic email. The reason for this is that AOL tends to re-use IPs all over the place. I remember checking an IP once, and saw about 20 names of actual, useful posters, and I think one mod. All from AOL IPs. So we'd probably want to be alerted about the IP then check it out ourselves.

Just a few ideas that I would like to see that haven't been mentioned yet. Of course they would need to be approved by King Doo Doo

Eliminate the New Topic Button WITHIN threads, so members (especially new members who are unaware how things work dont reply to a post by starting a new thread.

Fix the search to actually show the results of the members last post (in # of days), not the last post of a thread that a member may have posted in long ago.

Possibly a pull down window at the top of the page too so memeber don't have to scroll to the bottom. Providing that there is room on the page.

Automatically having the page return to the last page of the thread after a member posts (no more clicking -- that brings the thread back to page1... ughhh)

POLLS POLLS POLLS. (another InfoPop nicety) I remember them being useful in the member threads as well as the new Moderator choices. Fezzy would never be here had we had the "Poll" feature! Think about THAT!!! LMMFAO

Mods being able to edit / post in a locked thread without unlocking... posting... locking again. Another infopop feature.

And finally... When a post is deleted the thread doesn't drop down to the time/date of the initial post or whatever it does. We don't need Roger getting all in a tizzy again, LOL Need Proof? IS THIS A FUCKING JOKE??. When I read that title, as a few of you here know, I thought that Anthony was replaced on the show by someone who actually had some talent. Needless to say, I was let down...

As long as we can still do it...

Yes, mods can edit them, and thats the way it was in the InfoPop days. It was quite effective in controlling the assf's when their names were attached to an uglypeople.com sig pic, LOL And Fez, I never had people asking me to do them favoUrs to edit their posts.

What Kid did was funny. But after what F-Tool did, this is most definitely a priority. If it can be done, the malicious HTML & Javascript should be eliminated.

Another nice InfoPop feature that we lost.

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

Actually, long before any of you were mods, Opak accidentally banned all AOl members from signing up. He was a quite the idiot when it came to banning people.

First off... I'm totally digging the new admin button next to "Who Is" in people's status line... Thanks
quote:

Eliminate the New Topic Button WITHIN threads, so members (especially new members who are unaware how things work dont reply to a post by starting a new thread.
I like this idea... either eliminate it from within the actual threads & put a "New Topic" button at the top of each Forum... If this isn't possible, then how about if when people clicked on "New Topic" the had a warning/alert page show up first, letting the person know that they are about to start a new thread
quote:

Automatically having the page return to the last page of the thread after a member posts (no more clicking -- that brings the thread back to page1... ughhh)
Although I like that feature, I don't always want to go back to the thread I just posted in (unless it's a fast moving game/chat type thread)...I'd rather have a pull-down screen with option to Jump to any board.

another admin tool I think might be helpful is, if there is a way so that we can search the Members by sign-up date or by Member (Who Is ID) number. I understand that we get a wave of newbies everytime there's a mention on the show...or even the stragglers that find their way here thru O&A.com or Foundry. But, I have noticed in the past that new members tend to come in bunches, which makes it a good time for people like Mav to slip in a couple of new names to sit on for future use/abuse. I'm sure a majority of the new members are "actual new members", but I seen nights (overnight) where 5-10 new users sign up between say 1 to 5 AM...they all can't be newbies...

and... Is there anyway to keep a complete list of all IP's member's have posted with. I know I have posted from more than one place and have had a few IP's show... But, I'm sure that problem posters (banned members) have to have signed in from more than one location, be it, home, work, friends, whatever... as it stands now, we can only view the "LAST IP" logged in with.

I like this idea... either eliminate it from within the actual threads & put a "New Topic" button at the top of each Forum

There already is one there. :)

But are we approved on removing it from next to Post Reply?

I edited above with the new search capabilities, and just for Moron added in a list page of the 25/50/100 newest users. I'm thinking a drop-down to pick between 25, 50, and 100. Probably won't need to go much further back than that.

Or, if we can, along with those 3 options, perhaps an option to enter a MemberID (Whois ID#) range to list.

And I don't know if the IP list is possible, but it's worth looking into.

We're getting all ambitious, I love a challenge.. hehe...

Actually that brings another thing into play. How about the ability to search members based on profile information.

Ok, Froy, we just put in the profile search option for Pompousity. You were at the top of the search results, congratulations!

Bringing this up...

One thing that I would like to see fixed, and I believe that this shouldn't be put aside is...

fix search or at least make it where results come up chronologically

Also, if possible:

When you're in a forum and you click the "Posted By" link which sorts the threads alphabetically by poster name, it only works for the first page. Once you go to an older page, it returns to normal.

Actually, it does already.

It's chronological in the order of when that person posted in that thread. BUT - that's not the time it displays, it displays the thread's last reply.

That can be improved, definitely.

FTL, are you sure? Cause I just ran a search for all of my posts in the past 30 days and I specifically saw these dates in this order:

1/7/02
1/8/02
12/30/01
