Dear Constant Reader,

Roland of Gilead--also known as the gunslinger--has finally saddled up again. This time I'm hoping to press on to the very end and publish the remaining volumes all at the same time. That probably means three books, one of them fairly short and one of the other two quite long. As for the time it will take to write them...well, that's ka, isn't it? All I know for sure is that DT5 will almost certainly not be called THE CRAWLING SHADOW, as previously reported here (reported by me, in fact, but I was younger then). If I had to guess, I'd say that the push to completion will take two years, depending on all the usual variables, like sickness, accidents, and--scariest of all--a failure of inspiration. The only thing I know for sure is that all these old friends of mine are as alive as they ever were. And as dangerous.

I'm posting "Calla Bryn Sturgis," the prologue to DT5, to repay the readers of these stories, if only a little, for their patience. And in my own defense, all I can say is that it's never easy to find the doorway back into Roland's world.

Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake, and Oy all wish you well. So do I. And as the residents of the Calla might say, may this do ya fine, tell God thankee.

Steve

Black House by Stephen King and Peter Straub (the Sequel to The Tailism)
Release Date September 15, 2001

Twenty years ago, a boy named Jack Sawyer travelled to a parallel universe called The Territories to save his mother and her Territories "twinner" from a premature and agonizing death that would have brought cataclysm to the other world. Now Jack is a retired Los Angeles homicide detective living in the nearly nonexistent hamlet of Tamarack, WI. He has no recollection of his adventures in the Territories and was compelled to leave the police force when an odd, happenstance event threatened to awaken those memories.

When a series of gruesome murders occur in western Wisconsin that are reminiscent of those committed several decades earlier by a real-life madman named Albert Fish, the killer is dubbed "The Fisherman" and Jack's buddy, the local chief of police, begs Jack to help his inexperienced force find him. But is this merely the work of a disturbed individual, or has a mysterious and malignant force been unleashed in this quiet town? What causes Jack's inexplicable waking dreams, if that is what they are, of robins' eggs and red feathers? It's almost as if someone is trying to tell him something. As that message becomes increasingly impossible to ignore, Jack is drawn back to the Territories and to his own hidden past, where he may find the soul-strength to enter a terrifying house at the end of a deserted track of forest, there to encounter the obscene and ferocious evils sheltered within it.

YES!!!!!!!!

The Dark Tower Series is the BEST of King's work! I can't wait. When he was hit by that car, the first thing I thought was "There almost wasn't a conclusion to the Dark Tower!"

And the way he ties it in with subtle and some less than subtle connections to other stories is briliant.

This news is somewhat ironic, as I decided out of nowhere to start rereading the DT series today. I hae forgotten what a great series this is. The Talisman is also a hell of a read. Since he and Straub wrote that a while ago, it will be interesting to see how they manage to get back to the same characters after such a long departure from them.

All I ask of Mr. King is that he [b[doesn't make the DT series into a series for ABC. I think it would make a hell of an HBO series, but every tv series he has done from a good book has sucked ass.

Slightly off topic here, I just got done reading Hearts in Atlantis....great book. Not the Creepy Steven King we all love but it is another where he makes great references to music and paints a good picture back to the 60s

Hearts in Atlantis was very good. I keep wondering how they're going to make it into a movie when the book was really a collection of three or four interconnected stories that take place years apart. (By the way, Anthony Hopkins will be playing the old guy in the first story.)

And, there's a very BIG reference to the Dark Tower series in it!! (Wonder if they'll leave the reference in the movie and how they'll explain it.) Also in Insomnia which was another good one there's another reference to the Dark Tower.

Thanks for the Dark Tower references Capt. Obvious! There are references to the dark tower, the series or related things in almost all of his books...

Ahem, there's four of them now.

Stephen King had this to say about Black House on his website...
quote:

For those of you who are Dark Tower fans, Black House will answer many questions you may have about the Crimson King, who/what are Breakers, how does Ted Brautigan fit in, etc. It will be the closest thing to a DT novel you'll see before the fall of the Year Three ('03).
