Not sure about providers in Manhattan, but if you have the choice go with cable over DSL. It is MUCH faster and more reliable.

Cable modems are subject to a wide variance in speed, so try the DSL if you can get it

I have a cable modem with no complaints. My friends who tried to hook up dsl have had nightmare experiences. Take it FWIW.

Some differences between cable and DSL:

My DSL service averages 400kbs transfer rate. Up to 500kbps on a good day.

My brother-in-law (in the same town) uses Optimum Online cable services and averages 1600 to 2000kbps transfer rate.

DSL speed is focused mostly on DOWNLOADS not on UPLOADS. My DSL service only allows 90kbps of upload bandwidth. Cable service typically has no such restiction. It is an open pipe for high speed transfers in both directions.

So, in my opinion, cable is more gooder. :)

DSL is slower than cable (don't believe the HYPE about 'sharing' your connection with 400 people - it's BS).

On top of that, DSL will take you ~1 month to get installed. It too me 2 (TWO!!) months to be told that they couldn't really install it (even though they thought they could at first). Once cable was available, it too me 45 min to go to the wiz, get the modem, come home, set up and be done with it all. If you can't get optimum online, try time warner, but YMMV.

I have road runner, and I have no cpmplaints whatso ever. I've only had one outage for a few hours, but other than that, no problems with pages, downloads, etc - and it absolutely BLOWS 56K away. I've heard, as posted, that DSL is faster and more reliable, but I have two friends that had DSL for about 2 months apiece, and they got rid of it in lieu of cable, as it was nothing but a headache from installation to daily usage.

I have a cable modem, and it kicks ass..no problems at all. My sis has DSL and it sux. Besides I work for "Verizon" & I hear all kinds of shitty stories about installation and outages.

Cable rocks. DSL's have hang ups on installation and service. When I had a problem with a weak signal, cablevision was over the next day and fixed the splitter.

In the six months I've had cable, I've had only one disruption of service.

Just make sure you install a personal firewall
after you've chosen either service.

See Seph that's what I'm talking about...

290K/s download rate is like having a 2320k modem. NICE

I get about 50K/s which is like having a 400k modem. Nice but not as nice as cable.

If you can get either get the best one in your area check out www.dslreports.com for info.

I have had Verizion since October or so and at first it was really shitty but it has gotten better. At first the PPPOE software was crappy but when I got a Netgear router it fixed that problem as well as boosting my speed and allowing me to add another computer to the network. When I first had Verizion my speeds were 200/70 which was shitty but now im getting 500/80 which is about 80% what we are promised 640/90 which is what we should expect. Nothing more though. And Verizion is upping their plan to about 780/128 from what I hear soon.
