O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | can anyone give me a review of RCN's Cable Modem service in the Morris County area? Is it as fast as Optimum Online or Road Runner? I've read some reviews but they were from Chicago and PA and their down speed wasn't that impressive (around 1.6 to 2 megs down) but their up was decent (around 650-800K, which beats my 81K). Are your speeds pretty stable or would I see significant changes in speed? and the big kicker, is it stable? Kiss Me I'm Duff!

Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | I tried this tweak, and I have to give my honest opinion.... I have a cable modem and the speed is fucking awesome. Testing speed with online speedtests never truly gave me a good reading. I prefer to test by downloading large files. While I did see a little increase (3000kbps to 3800kbps(in bursts)), it doesn't seem to have made a huge impact on websites loading. Also, you are always limited by the speed of the server you are downloading from. SB, I don't know from RCN's cable modem service, but Optonline is very reliable as long as you have a clean signal coming into your house. I never see significant dips in performance, and I regularly download over 3GB in a weekend. I say you can't really go wrong with cable modem.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I had RCN in Morris County... the very Southern tip of the county. In my area we didn't have fiber optic installed yet - therefore there was NO digital cable and there was no REAL cable modem. What they gave me instead was a Hybrid cable modem. And that's not just a company - the thing is really a hybrid. In other words, the cable modem has an analog (phone line) modem built into it as well. The reason for this was that, since the digital lines had not been installed, the cable line could not handle two-way traffic. Only one way - which, of course, you want that to be your download. So it is. The analog line dials out when you want to connect to the internet, and gives you (at least with the one I had) a whopping 14.4 upload speed! Woo! While this is more than sufficient for downloading files (which downloaded at good speeds, somewhere between DSL and true cable), you wouldn't ever want to upload a file. Not worth it. Now, I know Hybrid has models with faster uploads, but ya never know what RCN might give ya. An easy way to test would be to go to Me droogies: HydratedPeach is siiiiingin' in the rain. Syndra has graduated and will one day take on droogs of her own. One position available. Come and get one in the yarbles.... if you have any yarbles.

O&A Board Veteran Registered: Jan. 01 | OK, I have a little problem with this. I tried it the night seph told me about it. And it worked great. But for the next two days, it decided it would just crap out and disconnect me. Then the only way I could re-connect was to reboot and then renew the IP address. WTF? I am running WIN98 SE with a cable modem. The modem is hooked up throught ethernet not USB. I ran the auto fix off the website. I didnt do it manually. Anyone else having a similar problem? Welcome to my nightmare.

I don't know how good satellite modems are, but I do know that their twice as expensive ($40 a month for cable modem, $80-$90 a minth for satellite modem) and are susceptible to the same interference as satellite television (rain, electrical storms, sunspots, etc.) "When I was born I was so surprised I couldn't talk for a year and a half." - Gracie Allen A much wittier reply came to mind immediately after I clicked the 'Send' button. O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Well, might as well mention that This trick does work in XP if you upgrade, so long as you do this trick BEFORE you upgrade. The XP patch will be out soon Im assuming. Once that happens, my modem will murder your children and finish that Turkey sandwich you have in the fridge. oh yeah, it'll be fast too.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | For the XP Users, I posted a link in the tech forum about broadband speed. I did the trick before I went to XP and after I seemed slow. Sure enough there are a bunch of settings you need to change in XP (especially the build 2600 that quite a few of us here are running) to get your desired speed. I don't know the specifics, but take a look at my post and I would recommend going to DSL Reports and use their speed tests - After I made all the changes, I'm moving faster than I was before XP. You can reach me through AIM or email. Don't be shy, drop a line and say Hi!

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I didn't edit my last post because I wanted to bring this to the top. Here are the steps I was referring to. Note that this is for XP Pro users only. And yes, this works with any hacked XP builds that members allegedly might be running. Windows XP limits the bandwidth of internet access by 20%. To increase your bandwidth follow these steps: 1. Start -> run 2. type in gpedit.msc click OK 3. On left hand side click on + next to Administrative templates (below Computer Configuration) 4. Click on + next to Network 5. Click to highlight QoS Packet Scheduler 6. On right hand side Double click on Limit reservable bandwidth. 7. Choose Enables and put a '0' (zero) in the box labeled "Bandwidth limt%"... Click OK and you will receive faster internet. Before anyone tries this, be sure to set up a System Restore point so if you should screw something up or are less than satisfied with the changes you can always go back. You can reach me through AIM or email. Don't be shy, drop a line and say Hi!
