| O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00  | September 9, 2001 -- A Post story yesterday helped cops bust a runaway au pair accused of abandoning her 6-year-old charge in the bathtub and stealing from her employer. Ildiko Varga, 25, approached an officer in front of the 106th Precinct station house in Howard Beach, Queens, yesterday afternoon, asking him if she could sue a newspaper that had written "something bad" about her, cops said. Varga showed the officer a story in yesterday's Post, which said Suffolk County cops had been searching for her since May 25 - the day she allegedly locked the little girl she was supposed to be caring for in the bathroom and ransacked her employer's Nesconset home. The child's mother had found her terrified daughter sitting naked on the toilet seat when she returned from work six hours later. Cops said the au pair stole luggage, money and personal belongings from her boss before she disappeared, the Post story said. Police had received a tip that the Hungarian au pair was hiding out in The Bronx. But Varga told the Queens cop that none of this was true. She was relieved when the officer told her that she could go to court with a libel lawsuit if the story was wrong. The cop told Varga she should come into the station house with him to talk about the possibility of slapping The Post with a suit. He then called Suffolk County cops to tell them that the runaway au pair had turned up. Varga was held at the Queens station house until Suffolk County cops arrived to arrest her. They took her back to Long Island and charged her with endangering the welfare of a child. Varga was the fourth au pair the mother had hired through the Connecticut-based Au Pair of America - and she's already hired a new au pair to replace her.  | ||||
