American Airlines and United Airlines are offering $25,000 to the next of kin of the victims on the flights. According to someone at American airlines, this practice began in June of 1999 after the Little Rock, AR crash. This $25,000 would be per person lost. They are sending out settlement letters immediately. Am I the only one who feels that it is wrong to put a $25k price tag on human life?

It is very wrong... $25K isn't even a down payment on the surrefing & hurt that these families are enduring...

However, at the same time, are they responsible for any settlement at all?

I wouldn't call it a settlement though. It's more of a reparation. But no matter what you offer the families, it will be too little.

Yes they are....they are responsible for your safety on their flights. From what I have heard on the news, these people should NOT have been allowed on these flights. They arrived late, paid cash, and bought one way tickets. In fact, one of these "people" was on the INS warning list (or something of that effect). Had better security measures been in effect, perhaps these animals would not have gotten on board.

On another note, I heard on the radio that at JFK yesterday, at 9:00 three men of Arabic nationality attempted to board a plane towards Los Angeles, but they were deemed suspicious and refused acess to the plane...they got on anyway and the staff threatened to call the police, and these "men" ran off the plane.

These people only had knives on them, and up until today you are allowed to carry a knife on flight as long as its blade is under 4 inches in length. Now airlines wont even serve a plastic knife with their inflight meals.

Is 25K reasonable in my opinion, no, but it is not the airlines fault entirely.

FMFB...I understand your point but it could have been any airline. All airlines comply with FAA guidelines which is all they are expected to do. Most airports have multiple airlines in each terminal so it is not an Airline check point that these passengers are passing through it is the airport check point. If anyone is to fault it is the airports but i do not feel it is their faults as much as it is the FAA. until yesterday I know of no reports of someone trying to hijack a plane with a knife. Why would the FAA not allow a knife that is legal to carry in all states in the US without a license needed. You cannot blame the airlines and i feel somewhat proud of the airlines involved for offering the money without any legal action takenagainst them first. I do feel for these families that lost loved ones and do not feel that any life is only worth $25,000 but we cannot place blame on these airlines.

there is no amount of money that can ever relace the lives lost and iI feel the blame should be directed to both the airlines and the FAA.the airlines hire minimum wage workers to man the secruity check points where they should have trained law enforcement. If i remember correctly when flight 800 went down there was a question if it was a action of terrorism then the airline would only have to pay 75,000 per person but if it was a mechanical failure there was no limit on the amount of money an estate could sue for.

What happened yesterday is a very good reason that no weapons of any kind should be allowed. You cannot get into Great Adventure with a knife nor can you go to certain movie theaters with a knife (metal detectors pick this up), you certainly should not be allowed on an airplane with a knife.

I know if I lost a loved one on one of those flghts, $25,000 would definitely not be enough to cover my losses, especially if you consider the fact that a funeral can cost as much as $5,000.

I think that it is good to see that they are doing something, even giving anything is better than nothing. What about all the people who died in the buildings these planes hit? What do they get? Those are also totally innocent people. They get nothing.

The only one responsible for this is those Arab mother fuckers. These douche bags got on with box cutters. Which were obviousley easy to hide. They are soley responsible for the deaths of all the passengers.

25 K isn't worth a life but they atleast are making an attempt to help those who lost. What if they didn't offer squat? Ae they supposed to offer more? I say good job by the airlines.

When the Value Jet plane went down in Florida, they paid the family members received $400,000 per victim. Is that enough? How much is a human life worth? How much can the airlines give to console for the loss of life? The answer: there is no price. Nothing is right or wrong. It's a tragedy that happened and to try and put an appropriate monetary value to it is wrong.
