I am a former Marine, who served 4 years and has been out for 4. I like many other Americans was saddened and then angered by what happened on 9/11. I want to see the fuckers and the families of these fuckers who did this- who are out on the streets celebrating burn in the eternal flame we are about to send upon them. I really want to go back as a reservist do my time over there kill a few ragheads, and come back home to my job, friends, and family. Basically if there are any former military in the IRR or know anything about recruitment please let me know what I am getting into. I already talked to a couple of recruiters and they are of no help. Just some of the things I want to know is- Do I have to attend any kind of formal school again? -How long of a commitment do I have to make, even after all this is over? -Will I be able to keep my rank that I came out with, even if I join a different branch. And if anyone is still in a Reeserve unit here- do they need Field Radio Operators... Thanks!

know anything about recruitment

Hello Marine. Good to see that you are ready to come back and help us.
I'm an active duty Marine stationed at a reserve base near Philly. I spent 3 years as a recruiter, and I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can, but I haven't been a recruiter since '95, so some of the info might be out of date.

recruiters and they are of no help
There is normally a very limited amout of spaces available for prior service Marines, this is why the recruiter did not spend a lot of time with you.

Do I have to attend any kind of formal school again?

Not if you come back into the same MOS.

You will probably be required to make a 4 year commitment to the Reserves. However, only the President (or Congress?) can authorize Reservists to be on extended active duty during war time, and they will say when you are done.

Will I be able to keep my rank that I came out with

Normally, E-4 and below will keep their rank. Anything above that will depend on how long you've been out, and what MOS you come back into. But don't be discouraged by that. Reserves normally promote a lot faster than active.

do they need Field Radio Operators

Keep pestering your recruiter about that. If he can't help you, find out what area his Recruiting Station (RS) covers. Each RS is responsible for a certain area, including the Reserve bases. If one RS can't get you in, go outside that area and find another RS with it's own set of Reserve bases. You can email me if you want more info.

Oh, the usmc.mil and usmc.com websites are great sources of info....

Well VooDude pretty much answered most of what I was gonna say...lol. It varies from branch to branch. The Marines are a bit stiffer on prior service members because of the notorious "Corps" limit. Generally unless you are in a critical MOS or recently discharged, it is tough to get back in.

As former Army Intelligence..... and please, no "oxymoron" comments huh?.... I know I have been considering reenlisting myself. The problems I face will be along the lines of potential waivers, as well as time out of service. My contract ended in 98, but I have been inactive since 95. I am however a "critical" MOS which bodes well. Unfortunately, I am not exactly in combat shape these days..... hell, at this point I would welcome another 8 weeks in basic! After all, who can't say that after they graduated they didn't look back and kinda want to do it again? :)

If your local recruiter isn't helping, you can try contacting others. It also wouldn't hurt to contact the nearest reserve center, their administrators can help cut through some paperwork, and light a fire under a recruiter if need be. Expect a grade reduction, however, at least in the Army, this is usually a 90 day reduction..... at the end of the 90 days, if you are back to form, you can usually expect to get your old grade back. Many times they will put you in a higher grade slot in expectation of this.... (i.e. an E4 in an E5 slot). Good luck whichever way you go.

Currently newbieless...unbelieveable!

Guys, Devildog... I appreciate all ur help w/ this... I have never felt so compelled to want to return to service. Just being there, helping out, even in a different uniform would mean a lot to me. I really feel my experience would be usefull(I was a 2531) in the Corps. Actually my IRR was fininished as of June this year. Even if I go in an Army Uniform, I feel I will always be a Marine, just as long as I get to take some bloody turbans home w/ me, I think I will be happy... PS. Voodude: I will EM u, w/ more specific questions if u have the time, thanks for ur help, and Slackjaw goodluck w/ u too... Hopefully we might be there for each other in these times of darkness...
