Okay, let me first start off by saying that this is a serious question.

Due to a lot of "soul searching" and things along that nature I've come to a decision. I want to enter the U.S. military. I need money for college, but also have always had an interest and intense respect for those in service.

Not to degrade any other branch of military service... but I thought I would best be suited in either of these three: Marines, Air Force, or Navy.

I would like to hear from any and all OA.com members. But, I would especially like to hear from any members who are part of the military. Perhaps you can tell me the positives and negatives of each and how you feel about your service to your country.

It's kind of impromptu, but I'm withdrawing from school and making a decision on which branch of service by the end of the weekend. For all of you that frequent the gaming section of OA.com... I know you'll miss my (cough) expert opinion on games.

Hey, for what it's worth... this isn't supposed to be a farewell. I'll be around. I'm sure I'll have internet access wherever I go.

I just hope I'm the first to ping Bin Laden in the head with my Carbine. Or drop rain from the heavens... whichever shall suit my choice. ;-)

Well it all depends on your motivation for entering the forces.

If you've always dreamt of taking to the skies then the air force is for you - although you can still fly in the other branches.

If you want to get down and dirty and don't mind having to worry about NBC threats then go nuts and sign up with the army or the marines.

If you're just looking for money for school the navy would be your best choice if only because historically they have the lowest casualty rate (and I don't think Bin Laden's been worrying about his naval capacity).

Thank you to all the brave volunteers who brought us all together as a country,
and thank you to those of you brave soldiers who will fight and have fought for our country.
We are a free people because of your efforts.

Don't set a deadline for this - take the time to research each branch of the service. They should all have a website that goes into detail about furthering your education in the future. Whatever your major is/was in school look for the branch that gives you the opportunity to get hand-on training in that field.

I doubt they will be sending you overseas - unless this thing goes on for a protracted period of time. Protecting American soil is equally important, if not more so than going to some foreign land.

Whatever your choice - I would be proud to know you are doing this to keep us safe.

Well, I may only be a distant cousin, but I think you're moving way to fast. Slow down and examine your true motivation.

If it's SOLELY to get an education and serve a Country you hold dear, I'd say enlisting is a smart and nobel move.

And this is where it seemed you were headed until I reached the part about pinging Bin Laden.

Only fools act strictly on emotion and I hope that statement isn't indicitive of your real reason for wanting to enlist. If it is, wait 6 months and see how you're feeling.

And even if it isn't, dropping out of school, assuming you're still in High School, is not a good move. Finish one commitment before beginning another.

As for which branch is best suited for you, staying in school allows you to use this semester to figure it out? Maybe spend a few weekends visiting various Forts and Naval Bases. Or perhaps deciding on what you want your area of expertise to be, thus narrowing the field.

Anyway, those are my thoughts - best of luck with whatever you decide!
