Scorsese's "Gangs" looks to 2002

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - It's all but certain director Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York" won't get a wide launch in 2001, though there's a small chance the Miramax period epic will get a limited release in late December before the Dec. 31 Oscar consideration deadline.
No one at the company would comment on the prospect of a date change, and a spokesman stressed the original Dec. 21 slotting still stood Wednesday.

But Miramax recently moved a wide debut for "Kate & Leopold," starring Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman, to Dec. 21, so it's unthinkable the studio would stick to that same date with the high-profile "Gangs," which stars Leonardo DiCaprio.

Although Miramax had envisioned making "Gangs" an Oscar magnet, the likeliest scenario is that the pricey picture will be held completely for wide release sometime in the first quarter of 2002. A final decision should come within days.

Set in the 19th century, the film follows the rise of rival Irish and Italian gangs in New York City. Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day-Lewis co-star.

It's believed "Gangs" currently runs about three hours in length, and Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein -- who recently screened the picture for the first time -- wants the running time cut to no more than 2:30.

Miramax is also said to be daunted by the prospect of marketing a gritty drama at a time when Americans likely will remain preoccupied with the recent tragedies in New York and Washington, D.C.
