A man who lives in Manassas Va may have the Anthrax. Va health dept. has issued a warning but preliminary test have not come back yet. The man is reported as an employee or sub contractor of the same paper in Florida. Weather he got the disease here or there is not yet known. No details have been released yet. It is said that he moved here from there but when he moved has not been made available.

I live in Northern Va and I hope this is an issolated case but who knows.

Move along people this has been a false alarm

The Va guy doesn't have Antrhrax.

I'm going to post what I saw on the Center for Disease Control site:

How common is anthrax and who can get it?

Anthrax is most common in agricultural regions where it occurs in animals. These include South and Central America, Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. When anthrax affects humans, it is usually due to an occupational exposure to infected animals or their products. Workers who are exposed to dead animals and animal products from other countries where anthrax is more common may become infected with B. anthracis (industrial anthrax). Anthrax in wild livestock has occurred in the United States.
How is anthrax transmitted?

Anthrax infection can occur in three forms: cutaneous (skin), inhalation, and gastrointestinal. B. anthracis spores can live in the soil for many years, and humans can become infected with anthrax by handling products from infected animals or by inhaling anthrax spores from contaminated animal products. Anthrax can also be spread by eating undercooked meat from infected animals. It is rare to find infected animals in the United States.

I really don't think these cases in Florida are terrorists related. I think its just an unfortunate isolated case(s).

Scrapple, I'm inclined to agree with you about the Florida cases not being terrorist related, but it's still scary shit. The fact that there has only been one other anthrax inhalation case in the US in the last 30 or so years make it extremely suspicious. I'm still waiting to hear what the investigation turns up.

By the way, if a guy from Manassas dies, it's really no big loss. I HATE Manassas.

The problem is, no anthrax cases in 30 years. A month ago, the twin towers tumble and now we have 2 cases of Anthrax infection.

Remember, hope for the best but expect the worst.

JJ,

Anthrax is caused by the bacterium Bacillus
anthracis
. The info that Scrappleking got
from the CDC explained the route of
transmission pretty well, but it didn't mention
that it was a bacterial infection.

Anyhoo, one of my microbiology texts says that
fewer than 10 cases of anthrax occur each
year in the U.S..

I know its scary, with the timing of the Anthrax cases. I've personally been on edge for the last month, can it really be a month already? But the media seems so eager to pin this on "the mysterious intern". I'm not saying the cases shouldn't take it seriously, I just think the news outlets have a hard-on for anything they can be even slightly connected with terrorism. The citizens of our country have more than enough to worry about w/out having MSNBC creating problems.

Scrappleking,

Yeah, I know what you mean. We're still in that
in-between realm of media-fueled paranoia
and waiting for results of investigations into
these anthrax cases. News outlets have a
tendency to report before verifying their
information. Still, as a microbiologist I'm a bit
nervous at the thought of a biological attack.
