On Wednesday, President Bush announced a list of 22 international terrorism suspects, including Osama bin Laden. The crimes they're connected to include the 1985 hijacking of a TWA jet; the 1993 World Trade Center bombing; the 1996 bombing of an apartment complex housing American troops in Saudi Arabia; and the two 1998 American embassy bombings in East Africa. Administration officials characterize this list as "a law-enforcement tool," hoping that the publicity will aid in their captures. There are also rewards of up to $5 million for information leading to arrests or convictions. "Terrorism has a face," said the President, "and today we expose it for the world to see." Just two days later, by request of the White House and the FBI, the exposure broadens as America's Most Wanted helps get the word, and pictures, out tonight in a special edition. (The show is pre-empted tomorrow night by baseball playoffs.) AMW will profile each suspect in depth, with information culled from a variety of sources. The show is a proven tool, thanks to sharp-eyed viewers whose phoned-in tips have led to the capture of nearly 700 fugitives. In addition, tonight's program will be offered to foreign television networks, in essence deputizing the world. Who knows when a limp here, a tattoo there, a seemingly benign idiosyncrasy or characteristic could be the catalyst that trips up an unsuspecting criminal? Knowledge is power.
