One Hurt in Second U.S. School Shooting in Days
March 7, 2001 8:11 pm EST

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Reuters) - A 14-year-old girl opened fire with a handgun in the crowded cafeteria of a Roman Catholic school on Wednesday, wounding a female classmate in the second U.S. school shooting in three days, police said.
The first school shooting in recent years to involve a female suspect unfolded at Bishop Neumann High School when eighth-grader Elizabeth Bush allegedly walked up behind 13-year-old Kimberly Marchese in a crowd of 115 students and shot her in the right shoulder with a .22 caliber handgun.

Marchese was hospitalized in stable condition at a regional trauma center.

"It is our information that the victim was seated inside the cafeteria during the lunchtime and the other individual walked up and shot her in the shoulder, one time, with a handgun," Williamsport police detective David Ritter told a news conference.

Bush allegedly brought the weapon to school from her parents' home near this central Pennsylvania community of 31,500, located about 120 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

The two girls, both eighth graders, apparently had been feuding. Investigators described Bush as a shy teenager who transferred from public school a year ago because of harassment only to face more clashes with her new classmates.

She was charged with several juvenile counts including attempted homicide, assault and illegal possession of a weapon, and was jailed in a juvenile detention center.

The Lycoming County district attorney's office said prosecutors would decide over the next day or so whether to ask a juvenile court judge for permission to try her as an adult.

Shortly before noon the sound of gunfire sent students running from the building or scurrying to barricade themselves in nearby rooms.

"About half the student body was there," said Maria Orzel, spokeswoman for the Diocese of Scranton, which oversees the school.

Church officials initially reported that school administrators had talked Bush into surrendering the weapon. But police later said a ninth grader persuaded her to put the gun down and give herself up.

Meanwhile, Marchese was flown in stable condition to a trauma unit at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, 30 miles away. Doctors were expected to perform surgery.

The wounded girl had been scheduled to be confirmed as a member of the Catholic church by Scranton Bishop James Timlin on Wednesday evening, church officials said.

Over the past few years, American schools have been the scene of shootings in Oregon, Arkansas, Kentucky, Colorado and California. But until now, those responsible have been boys.

On Monday, a 15-year-old boy in Santee, California, opened fire in his high-school, killing two teenagers and injuring 13 other people. Since then, there has been a string of school incidents across the United States, involving threats of violence or children found with guns in school.

School shooting incidents have fueled debate over whether to tighten restrictions on gun ownership.

Investigators in Williamsport interviewed dozens of Bishop Neumann students and conducted a full-scale search of the building to determine whether anyone else was involved in Wednesday's incident.

There was no word on what, if anything, the search turned up.

What the hell is going on in this country? Jesus, I mean, when i went to school, the worst I ever did was throw an M80 in the toilet - and THAT was like, wow, "you da man" - today, kids gotta wear the kevlar in math class just to get through the day. This is really sad......

I go to these schools where everyone says after the fact says I would have never expected this. It is getting scarier and scarier to go to school these days. I don't want to go to take a piss and get a shotgun cartridge pumped in me.

Remember when Louis Black said the 2nd amendment was enacted "when there were bears everywhere" so you needed guns. Great, let's have a 3 day waiting period to buy a gun "I had to wait 3 weeks for a couch." Amen.

I agree with Froy -- a well-regulated militia was probably key to that amendment -- not the right for a 14 year old kid to own a gun.

This scares the hell out of me Because I have two kids of my own and each year the age on these gun toating children gets lower and lower.

Next year it will be twelve year olds and so on and so on. To think that I could be getting a call one day because a child went bizerk and killed other students, as well as my own frightens me.

We should be able to send our children to school and not fear this. but this happens all over not just in schools. Grown adults also go crazy killing co workers. Has this world become that hard to live in.

I pray that one day things of this nature will be non existant.

These kids are seriously disturbed. And if I hear one more word of that violence in the media crap I am going to go nuts. If anyone remembers there were two killers named leopold & loeb that were teenage murderers in the 1920s.

C'mon it's not the media. I mean I'm old but there was violence on TV and in movies when I was growing up (alright we had no video games). We didn't go around shooting classmates cause they pissed us off. We just kicked their ass or they kicked ours. And then usually became friends after a fight.

Difference is we had parents at home. Don't know if that's the reason but 95% of the kids I grew up with had their mom at home.

I remember the Michigan shooting. That kid had no real comprehension of what he did.

See that's the key, he was able to get a gun (his uncle's I think). If he wasn't that poor little girl would still be here.

sure he didnt come from a perfect home, he lived with his uncle (whose name happened to be Sir Marcus which should have been everyone's 1st sign that something was not right) and he was surrounded by drug dealers, but i was just making a point that there was a school shooting done by a child younger then 12

This may just be the begining who knows how far they will take it one day. Just look at Columbine. Kids that are suicidal ae the worst, they know they are going to take themselves out but before they go they want to leave something behind to haunt people forever. Or give themselves a damn good reason for taking their own life.

I blame the media (not violence on tv and games). They are the most hypocritical opportunistic scavengers ever. They will do anything for a scoop. When kids already thinking about this see that and they say to themselves that they are already going to commit suicide anyway and whats the problem if I take a few people go down with me. I'll become famous, die, and knock off people I don't like. If it wasn't for the damn reporters there wouldn't be so many copycat killers.

GrqtOandAfan,

Please don't misunderstand me. I was not suggesting you were being unfair to the kid (understood you were just talking about the age). I was just saying that if he didn't get his hands on a gun, it wouldn't have happened.

Yeah, and the Sir Marcus thing should have been a tipp-off.

I was just watching the news regarding this, and someting that was said struck a chord in me. One guy was being interviewed, and for sake of keeping this post short, his basic statement was "what can we do?"!! Heres a start - have parents SPEND MORE TIME WITH THEIR KIDS and maybe even trying to LISTEN TO THEM! I am in no way trying to say these kids are not responsible for their actions (blame the parents) - far from it. What I am saying is that if maybe their parents took a more active postion in their kids lives and communicated more with them, this might have been prevented. Granted, I'm on the outside looking in, and I don't know these poeple from a hole in the wall, but its just common sense to me. If you have kids, and you see them acting a certain way you don't like, or if there is ANY cause of concern, no matter how small, I think the parent should have a sit-down, and try to discuss it with them.
Is this a be-all, end-all solution? of course not. But I think it's a very good way to form a solid understanding as to where kids and parents stand with each other, especially if it is started at a very young age. I grew up in the 80's, im a fresh 29 years old, and my parents weren't like my best friends, but we did communicate - whether it was through speaking or through actions. I listen to metal, smoke some weed, get drunk, etc, all the "bad things", but I've never felt like I had to pack a piece and kill anyone - ever.

My fiancee' is a treacher in the NY Board of Ed (first grade), and some of the horror stories she tells me about the kids and their family situations really upsets me. Theres an old saying, "it starts with the family" - I really believe thats such a true statement, and more people need to realize that today.

Goodamn, I'm tired - forgive the long post, I just had to get that out.

Yet another one

DELTONA -- A fifth-grade boy on Tuesday threatened to bring a gun to Sunrise Elementary School, one day after a school shooting in Southern California left two people dead and 13 others injured.

Police searched the 10-year-old's belongings but did not find a gun.

His parents were contacted and the school sent him home for the day. Sheriff's officials have said they will not press charges. School officials have not yet decided whether to punish the boy.

"We don't take any threat lightly," said Sunrise Principal Dolores Sapp.

The boy's name wasn't released because he is a minor.

The incident happened Tuesday morning when the boy was taking a test, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. He asked a teacher to help him answer a test question. When the teacher said no, the boy became angry and threatened to get a gun from home and bring it to school, a sheriff's spokesman said.

When deputies asked the boy about the incident, he said he just wanted help with his test and didn't mean any harm. The boy's parents said he doesn't have anything at home more harmful than a BB gun, deputies said.
