read the excerpt below and check out the
website for full info.. do NOT download
anything that has the subject HI and the
attachment is Goner.scr (it would most likely
be from someone you know)

(CNN) -- Antivirus companies warned people
Tuesday about a rapidly spreading new e-mail
worm that is capable of deleting certain
computer programs.

The mass-mailing Internet worm goes by the
name "Goner" and is distinguishable by its
subject line (Hi) and the body of the message,
which promises a screensaver. The
attachment is called "Goner.scr."

Written in Visual Basic, Goner spreads
through Microsoft's Outlook Address Book and
even tries to send itself out through online
chat programs ICQ and IRC.

According to antivirus company F-Secure,
Goner also tries to delete several executable
(.exe) or program files and shows a fake error
box to disguise itself. The files it tries to delete
are mostly antivirus programs and personal
firewalls, making it doubly malicious.

The body of the message reads:

How are you?
When I saw this screen saver I immediately
thought about you
I am in a harry (sic), I promise you will love it!

I just can't believe all the things people say.

lyneday, you have a virus running on your computer right now. It is either 1 of 3 viruses - Aol 5.0, AOL 6.0, or AOL 7.0 :)

OK, I wasn't going to post this, but since you started a thread already. Here goes...

quote:

Security companies have issued warnings about a couple of new computer worms. If BadTrans.B gets into your computer, it spreads by sending itself to people who have sent you messages, and then it records your keystrokes and gathers private info like user passwords. The BadTrans message has no text but has an attachment that could say, among other things, "ME NUDE," "Sorry About Yesterday" or "YOU ARE FAT." The other booger making the rounds is called W32.Aliz, which allows some e-mail messages to automatically launch programs.

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

That's just WRONG. It's true, and that's why it's funny. But WRONG :)

Here's some more info.
Anti-virus companies received the first samples of Goner from Europe, particularly France and Germany. Ian Hameroff, a business manager at Computer Associates, said about 30 of its clients worldwide reported getting the worm.

By Tuesday afternoon, several major anti-virus companies, including McAfee and Symantec, had released updates so their software can detect Goner.

Several virus experts wondered why Goner, which doesn't spread in any new or novel way, was so successful in tricking users. The e-mail message even has a misspelled word, one of the tip-offs to malicious software.

They really only put this here cause they know users are going to read it.

You know, cause if they had written "I can't believe our fucking users were STUPID enough to click on YET ANOTHER VIRUS!" it might get some complaints... but that's what they're really thinking...

I actually got this email 3 times today from the same person, but it had no attachment. I'm virus scanning now, but I should be pretty safe since I couldn't click on an attachment that wasn't there. Right?

**EDIT** Virus scan came up clean.

Don't use IE that's what causes the problem.

And I don't trust those Anti-Virus companies. They start sending the feds after you if you criticize them and make backdoors for government made viruses and trojans.

You don't have a sense of humor in person. Why would I think you would have one on a message board.
