Yeah, I know.... WTF am i doing posting this a day before it opens.. well... i wanted to beat Slack or fbdling (whatever) to it
Anyway.. once you've seen it.. you know the drill...
I'm going to see the first showing, tonight at 12:01 AM (hey.. I've been reading the damn books for 20 years, I'm obsessed, ok?) and i can't wait, it looks like it's gonna be pretty good.. as long as you can get past some of the inconsitencies, like Arwen wielding a sword..
Though I am upset they didn't film the Old Forest/ Tom Bombadil chapters, but we'll see how it works tonight.

My quick thoughts, I love this series, almost as much as Jordans Wheel of time. In a way, they are very similiar, but for some reason, I dont think that this movie will work well. I have some doubts and I am afraid of getting disapointed because of having read and reread the books.

The NY Post reviewed it today and gave it 4 stars. It is also a 3 hour movie.

I too have been looking forward to this movie for so long now that I can't even remember how long. However everyone should stop and think about something.

Do you want this movie to be ruined because you can't seperate the book from the movie? Think about this, how in the fuck could you POSSIBLY re-create on film the most epic written story of all time? It would be impossible to translate it 100% accurately to film. Something that has been done so many times in the past, and something that ALMOST all of the typical public doesn't realize is that you can't just take a book and shoot a film from that. You need to write a script that will be able to be portrayed by live actors. When you read a book, your imagination is the limit.

If you're going to sit and compare this movie scene for scen with the book, then I suggest that you do not go to see it becuase you will be disappointed.

That is exactly why I did not reread the books again in anticipation of this movie. I very rarely go out to the movies, but, this one I am really looking forward seeing asap.

Nononononon Danny, I was simply stating that it most likely won't be exactly like the book, so you shouldn't go into it thinking that it will be a direct translation of the book. But it still will be a KICK ASS movie.

That is exactly what I was thinking as well Luna. All my friends decided to re-read the books right before the movie came out. But instead, I'm gonna re-read them AFTER I see the movie.

Lord Magus,
I for one am glad you did. I was going to start a thread last week when the preview shows & promos were starting up, but didn't have the nerve to start the thread ;)

What makes me nervous is the buildup/promotion. Every where you go now you see LOTR previews, stories, etc. NY Times has a Tolkein section The Tolkein Archives , LOTR is on the cover story of this week's TV guide, Newsday articles, The Elijah Wood talk show circuit, the commercials, Burger King tie in's, etc.

I remember when the Bakshi film premiered; I saw it at the Zigfield Theater. There was so much hope, and it didn't live up to expectations. Follow up movies, which were planned, were scrapped.

Peter Jackson has filmed all three films at once, a $300 million gamble. There is some interesting casting -Ian McKellen as Gandalf & Christopher Lee (who will appear in next SW film) as Saruman.

Will it be faithful enough to satisfy those devoted Tolkein readers, and will it be interesting enough to those who know nothing about the epic?
I for one will wait with baited breath.

that's exactly what i'm planning. i haven't read them since high school, so when they first announced the movie i thought about reading them again before hand, but i think it's better this way. i was worried that the movie would just not be good enough, but having seen some of the making of shows it looks like they've really gone all out. i can't wait to see this movie, and i expect to see it more than once, which i never do.

saw it tonight, not a major fan of the books and was pretty much underwhelmed. it looked good, good effects, some good performances but all in all it seemed kind of lacking and I couldn't help but MST a few parts. I do recommend it since the time passed quickly but not hightly.

ok.. the bad stuff..

I've discussed this before, Arwen wielding a sword and taking Glorfindel's cameo (Glorfindel being a full on Elf lord.. Arwen being the daughter of a Half Elf) just didn't sit well.. I understood what Jackson was doing perfectly.. and I could reasonably work around it... but after seeing it Jackson i think went just a bit too far in trying to add depth to what is essentially a perihperal character to the main story.. add to that that instead of the river driving off the Nazgul apparently on it's own (and later being revealed that gandalf and Elrond, both wielders of elven rings of power, caused it to happen) he has Arwen chant a spell and SHE drives them off...
I'm sorry... that just doesn't work in trying to stay true to the books at all..

The second negative I have... In his attempt to empower the mysticism surrounding Galadriel, Jackson went a little over the top... it works, but it was a lot like the effect the constant voice overs in Dune generated.. just kinda wierd..

However... after sitting through three hours of film, and only having critical opinions of about 10 minutes of it.. I have to say that with the possible exception of Misery.. this is by far the most accurate, true to the original story's thrust, conversion of book to film I have ever seen, on par with brahm stoker's dracula .
Sure.. it seemed long at points.. but the books get long winded as well at times.. and any events that were missing (such as Tom Bombadil) were definitely not missed.. it would have been nice to see them, but the film and story didn't suffer from their lack.
Jackson also expounded on some things.. we get a more in depth look at Saruman's activities while the ring travels from the Shire to Rivendell... we even see the birth of the Uluk-Hai, which is certainly a treat, but two of the best add on's are the in depth prologue, which describes the history of the rings of power and follows the one ring to Bilbo's hand, much as the opening to Bakshi's film does.. and the battle between Saruman and Gandalf at Isengard is a neat "interpretation" as well.
Visually the film is a masterpiece.. Jackson knew just what to emphasise and the effects are astounding.. the scenerey is constant eye candy... the special effects don't overwhelm, but emphasise, such as when Gandalf asserts himself to Bilbo and appears to grow taller, and more straight.. but then shrinks and stoops to an old man again... the amazing way they were able to make humans and elves appear to tower over the hobbits and dwarves without obvious special effects tricks.. the clothing and equipment "styles" for each race or group.. and let's face it... the orcs prosthetics looked spectacular.
Jackson was able to maintain the feel of the conversations without scripting the book verbatim.. and even inject some modern references as well.. primary example.. at one point in Moria the fellowship must cross a collapsing walkway, Aragorn begins throwing the hobbits across to Legolas, he turns to Gimli to give him a hand, and Gimli replies with typical dwarven irritation "Nobody tosses a dwarf!!"
and the battle at the riverbank with the Uluk-Hai when the followship breaks is spectacular... one friend who saw it with actually said "when i saw that I thought they were going to change the book and kill Aragorn.. it rocked!"
And yes... Borimir's end met expectations.. I would have liked to see his chest sprout a few more arrows before he went down... but the bodies strewn about him more than made up for it.

Ok.. I don't want to give the WHOLE thing away... but I THINK it's safe to say that if you LIKE the books, you'll enjoy the movie.. if you're someone who doesn't like the books, then it's probably not worth the three hours.. if you're neither, but enjoy fantasy.. you should probably take the time to see it.. just keep in mind.. this isn't a "trilogy" like Star Wars.. each episode won't have it's own defined conflict/goal/closure, with an overall equivalent.. but will instead be a steady approach to the goal first presented here in fellowship.. the destruction of the ring.. there will certainly be the traditional story arcs.. but their progress will not mark the progress of the films.. there really won't be any sense of "completion" until the end of Return of the King.

LOL...Last night I thought about my above post and despite whay any may think, I was not smoking crack...it was just a momentary lapse of reason. I woke up today, lined the pockets of my coat with many foodstuffs and vetured from the safe confines of my shire to see the movie.

I put the books out of my head and got a great seat at the back of the top balcony and had a little picnic as I watched...I don't know how the theater I go to stays in business, it's never crowded. Oh, yeah, despite Ikea's opinion, and generally I appreciated his self-depracating humor and mostly agree with his reviews of tv and hollywood, AND despite the fact that I liked Harry Potter, this movie was the best thing I've seen in a looooooong time...made Harry Potter look like the child's play that it was. Now kids everywhere will be inspired to read the best fantasy story ever told. Just my opinion...

LM, this comment isn't for you (since you probably know it), but for others -
LOTR wasn't actually written as a Trilogy. It was written to be one story. However, publishers being what they are, didn't think people wanted a 1000+ page book, so they broke it up.

I'm glad that the movie seems to hold its own. I'm taking my 9 yr old son to see it this weekend; I prepped him by renting the Bakshi version so that he knows the story line, and he asked to start reading the hobbit. Nice to pass on a tradition :)

Just remember - The 2 towers - opens in only 51 weeks :)
