Write To Me Here

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

Wow, I can't believe I didn't notice this before... That "effin douchebag" didn't even read the effin topic description.
I realise that is not my place to make this sort of reccomendation but, isn't the first rule of OA.com "think before you post"?
Well, how can you think if you haven't even read the effin topic? I think he/she should be made an example of...
Just my opinion. Do with it as you see fit.

oh and, another one that I'm embarassed to admit I've never seen "The Truth About Cats & Dogs".

Best I've never seen? Well, I tend to avoid Hollywood blockbuster type films as much as possible, so I haven't seen ID4, Titanic, Pearl Harbor, Godzilla remake, Men In Black, movies of that sort. Don't know many people who actually would call them good, though.

Anyway, I still haven't seen The African Queen, which someone else already mentioned. Heard that's supposed to be really good. Also, Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, which is supposed to be the best screen translation of a Shakespeare work, and On The Waterfront, which I am ashamed to have not yet seen.

A few comments...
quote:

I found Scarface to be extremely over-rated. I thought it dragged on too much.
I just think they tried to overcompensate for a weak story with shock tactics (for the time), while cashing in on the post GF mob-movie hype. It's a good enough movie, but hardly anywhere near the level of the 2 Godfathers.
quote:

Also I've never seen Enter The Dragon, which is supposed to be a great movie.
Overrated. The only reason why this is the most famous of Bruce Lee's movies (thus seen as the best in the eyes of the unwashed) is because it was filmed for American screens with a big budget. Check out Fists of Fury or The Iron Hand instead, as both are better films.
quote:

I've also never seen GwtW and heard it's more a chick flick than a good movie.
It's SO much more than a chick flick. You owe it to yourself to see it.
quote:

Kane is a great flick but not the best. What is the best? here's a hint- it's mentioned in this thread
Ok IkeaBoy, I'll bite. What do you think is the best, and why is it better than Citizen Kane?

Ok IkeaBoy, I'll bite. What do you think is the best, and why is it better than Citizen Kane?
First off let me say I think Kane is a phenomenol picture and I've seen it numerous times but in my opinion, the best movie ever made is A Clockwork Orange. I just enjoyed it more, was more entranced by it, thought it was better written and better made. Nothing against Kane but there are people who think other movies are better.

Ok man, no need to get defensive. I was just asking cause you seem to know your shit when it comes to movies. And A Clockwork Orange is actually one of my favorite movies ever, hell I enjoy it more than Kane, but judging objectively I can't say it's better, or even Kubrick's best (Dr. Strangelove).

Thanks for the AFI tribute to John Ford.
Mister Roberts one of my fav's. Henry Fonda, Jimmy Cagney, Jack Lemmon - how could you go wrong.

And you beat me to the comment about Teenweek's list.

Raging Bull, Apocalypse Now, Godfather, Psycho, & Deerhunter - go get them NOW!!

Saturday Night fever isn't a great film, although it made Travolta's career (the 1st time). Part of the appeal is having lived through NYC especially Brooklyn) in the 70's.

Grease - mostly a girl movie, with singable songs. not a cinematic tour-de-force.

People, there are video stores now, as well as cable TV. Your life is incomplete. Do something about it :)

If having seen these movies make my life complete it's pretty fucking sad.

As unbelievable as this may sound, I've never seen any of the Godfather movies yet. The Mrs. just got the trilogy for me on DVD so I will soon, but to this day I've only seen a few parts of the first one.

If I'm gonna be called it, I might as well be it.

I rented Shadow of the Vampire, fell asleep when it started, woke up when it was over

I never saw ET
I never saw Rain Man
I never saw Gone with the Wind
I never saw Godfather ((any of 'em))
I never saw Casablanca
I never saw Citizen Kane
I never saw Full Metal Jacket, but I made fun of Tim and asked him if his gun was named Suzanne. He didn't think it was that funny.
I never saw Apocolypse Now

...and I got it on during Scarface, so I missed that one too.

I need to find someone to rent all of 'em w/ me, and just spend the weekend watching movies.
