Is everyone else disgusted with movies, TV, and music lately? Personally I feel that marketing plays a far too important role in entertainment these days.

I don't have statistics to back me up but it seems like movies have been crippled by the quest for the blockbuster. It appears that there are fewer releases and fewer movies driven by actors rather than special effects.

A great movie like star wars has been raped by the need to market Happy Meals and action figures.

TV has become nothing but a cloning of the one original program that comes out every three or four years.

And I am sick to hell of musical groups that don't write, can't play, and have marginal vocal talents. Fuck the three black chicks, five white boy groups.

Maybe this belongs in the FU thread, but.....
I read Ikeas thread on the n'syc star wars thread.... I am just getting tired of waiting for the return of quality.

I agree that TV sucks excpet for a few select shows (Family Guy, Sopranos). I don't see that changing anytime soon, nor do I really care.

As far as movies and music, its all about looking past whats on the radio and on 3,000 screens. Take a field trip to the Angelika Film Center, dload some hosted music off Audiogalaxy. There are plenty of good movies and music out there if you know where to look. I mean, noone is forcing you to listen to three black chicks.

Everything you say is true sleeper but......

I don't really have the time or energy to have to search hard for my entertainment.

I grew up in the 70/80s and since then the scope of music has narrowed so much. There was so much more diversity a few years ago. Change the dial on the radio and there was New Wave, Punk, Metal\Hard Rock, Rock\Pop, etc.
Hell I even liked rap back in the day (before it's sole focus was killing cops, slappin yo bitches, and crying over biggie smalls.

On topic:

I agree with the stalker about the music and movies. As for television, I gave up watching that a long time ago.

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

You also didn't have the internet in the 70s/80s and I think that the entertainment value it provides makes up for what is lacking in the other 3 mediums. Plus, I think most people tend to favor what they grew up with rather than what is currently popular.

Marketing plays an important part of entertainment since the purpose for most of entertainment is to make money.

Yes many TV shows and movies suck but if you look hard enough there are good things out there. Movies this year like Ghost World, Donnie Darko and Mullholland Drive never got wide release but are hells better than 99% of the shit released by Hollywood each year. and if you look hard enough you could find an online gem on something like Ifilm.

As for TV there's always late night stuff like Daily show and Conan, the aforementioned Family Guy, South Park and a couple of other diamonds in the rough. The thing is conventional sitcoms have run their course-the misunderstandings, the characters, etc. People still watch because they like tradition but if you look at shows like FRIENDS and FRASIER you realize how mind boggling bad they are. most dramas have run their course after years and it's painfully obvious they are grasping for life and more money (perfect example- The X-Files).

The 'blockbuster' movie has been around for years. It's not just now. If huge movies weren't popular how else could you explain half of the shit that came out of the 30s. The difference now is we have better effects.

As for music, I've never been much into it.

Too much mass production in an attempt to create a surefire formula. It's a large reason why I am so much a throwback with my Music & Movie tastes.

i'm sorry as far as TV goes. lets see the WB and UPN are sorry excuses for TV stations.
The only decent things to watch are on HBO, NBC, and hey if you're into Queer as Folk and Chris Isaak (too many commericals, despite the more gooder of less), well then showtime too.

Complaints? Too bad!
