I love most Jerry Bruckheimer movies. But is it ok to put a movie about 9/11 out within the next few years. Besides the 45 minutes of Pearl Harbor that was exciting, the rest blew. I guess he will have Bruce Willis playing a fireman, Ben Affleck playing a cop and Nicholas Cage taking the plane down that was to hit the white house.

Bruckheimer considers 9/11 film
By KAREN BUTLER
NEWTON, N.J., Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Action movie king Jerry Bruckheimer, whose new film
"Black Hawk Down" opened this week, says there were so many acts of bravery surrounding
the tragic events of Sept. 11, he believes he will one day make a movie about some
of them.

"I love making pictures that make a difference, about people who make a difference,"
Bruckheimer said in a phone interview with United Press International Monday.

Asked if that meant he could make a movie about the terrorist attacks on the World
Trade Center and the Pentagon four months ago, he replied: "Sure. I think there will
be stories that will come out of [the terrorist attacks on the United States] and
they will be very heroic and worthwhile telling and somebody is going to have to sit
down and write it. I'm sure it will be a journalist just like Mark Bowden [the author
of 'Black Hawk Down,' the non-fiction book on which Bruckheimer's new movie is based,]
who saw these young men being dragged through the streets back in 1993 and said, 'Boy,
I bet there's a real story about that' and he went out and researched the book."

Famous for producing "Top Gun," "Armageddon" and "Pearl Harbor"--blockbusters about
real and imagined American heroes -- Bruckheimer did, however, admit that the wounds
inflicted on America last year are still too fresh to turn into a movie any time soon.

"Black Hawk Down," which stars "Pearl Harbor" cast members Josh Hartnett and Tom
Sizemore, hits theaters almost nine years after a group of U.S. soldiers were killed
during a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Somalia.

Bruckheimer pointed out that that movie's release while the United States is fighting
a war in Afghanistan is particularly meaningful "because it shows you what [the soldiers]
might be doing or are doing over there."

"When you turn on your television and you watch the news, what you see is a journalist
and maybe behind him you see a puff of smoke and that's as close as you get to warfare,"
he explained. "['Black Hawk Down' takes you inside the world of these Rangers and
these Delta guys and shows you what a day in their lives is like."

Bruckheimer went on to say: "There hasn't been a movie made about modern warfare
and what these special forces do and, for me, it is very comforting to know that you
have these men who will go into these horrific situations to protect our country and
our freedoms and I really felt it was really important first to set the record straight
on Somalia and how courageous these men were and also to show how they operate in
such difficult warfare, which is urban warfare, which they say is the most difficult
to do because it is building by building, block by block... This is the biggest fire
fight we've been in since the Viet Nam war. It lasted 18 hours."

Before Bruckheimer and director Ridley Scott ("Gladiator") began filming "Black Hawk
Down," they studied Bowden's meticulously researched book and interviewed dozens of
special services soldiers who survived the mission. Several veterans were also hired
to act as technical advisers on the set.

"According to the Rangers from Delta that saw the picture, they were overwhelmed
by how accurate it was. We also showed it to the families of the men that died over
there... a couple of women were pretty angry that we were going to make the movie
and after they saw it, one of the women came up to me with tears in her eyes and hugged
me and said, 'Thank you so much for making such a wonderful, powerful movie that my
husband will never be forgotten,'" Bruckheimer recalled. "That made it all worthwhile."

In addition to a great story and terrific dramatic performances by its cast, the
film also boasts the kind of heart-pounding action fans have some to expect from a
"Jerry Bruckheimer" movie.

Asked to describe what a "Jerry Bruckheimer" movie entails, the producer whose movies
have grossed a total of $12.5 billion, explained: "When you see the name and the logo,
I think what's important is that you're going to be entertained. Whether it's something
powerful and realistic like 'Black Hawk Down' and brutal or something like 'Pearl
Harbor,' which is more romantic or something like 'Remember the Titans' which is exceedingly
emotional or 'The Rock,' which is all-out entertainment... We like to hit them all,
but the one thing, hopefully, is you'll never bored."

Bruckheimer went on to say that he has been trying to broaden his horizons in recent
years with films like the true-life dramas "Remember the Titans" and the upcoming
"Chasing the Dragon" and the comedies "Down and Under" and "Bad Company."

"I like all kinds of movies," the producer declared. "I'd hate to make just one type
of film. I like to try different genres because it makes it more exciting because
you learn more... When you attack another genre, it's all fresh and you have to start
all over again."

Whether it's because of his track record at the box office or his innovative and
open-minded producing style, one thing is for sure: Hollywood's hottest actors all
seem to want to work with Bruckheimer and those who have already worked with him leap
at the chance to do it again.

The producer has a simple explanation for this.

"I listen," he revealed. "I know I don't know anything. You work with these young
actors or directors or writers and you have got to listen to them because they come
up with phenomenal ideas. And to shut the script and say you read these lines and
just go out there and go to work is not how we operate. We invite their input and
their collaboration and that's why they want to come back. Because they know their
voice will be heard. When I tell them something they know it's going to happen."

I think a realistic portrayal of the events that occurred on September 11, 2001 will be fine some time in the near future.

People need to get a feel for what it was really like.

I won't see it, but I think it is an important lesson to reinforce.

That being said, I think our "war" on terrorism is a total farce. We should prosecute all terrorists with vigor and to the fullest extent of our resources.

If I ever see anything like September 11, 2001 again, I'm going to kill someone.

Disgusting....its one thing to make a movie about heroic acts of military personnel...sad as it is when something happens to them, they are not regular citizens and they knew the assumed risk of putting on the uniform. Its another thing to make a movie about some poor guy on his way to a business meeting who had to take down his plane in a field to prevent more lives from being taken...I for one know that if that was my husband, proud as I may be, I would NOT want to see that on the big screen because NO ACTOR can emulate the character of any of the people who died 9/11....let these people have some dignity.

Well Buttmunch, get your killing shoes on because based on our actions to date, it will happen again.

I agree with you that this war, to date has been a farce. Not the commitment and actions of our armed forces, their bravery and commitment to duty is an honor to be respected. However, our policy of allowing thousands of Taliban soldiers to go free, our inability to have captured any high ranking taliban or al Quida officials and or reluctance to prosecute the likes of Walker for his traitorous crimes will doom us to repeat.

Our great and fearless "Thank God he's in the White House" leader Dubya, is talking big but back peddaling every turn he takes.

Oh and looky looky, 3000 posts. Aren't I special?

Please this war is a fucking joke, don't even get me started on it...we started with good intentions, but we've done SHIT! We've gotten only one high ranking Al Queda official and fucking Mullah Omar's driver is in Newsweek (I think thats the right magazine) explaining how he got out of the country....all we've done is destroy terrorist camps and put the lives of our armed forces on the line... Its bad enough what happened, but can we please get some results and NOT have to read about how this scum bag escaped in a magazine?!

AMERICAN LIFE TURNS INTO BAD JERRY BRUCKHEIMER MOVIE

NEW YORK—In the two weeks since terrorists crashed hijacked planes into the World Trade Center and Pentagon, American life has come to resemble a bad Jerry Bruckheimer-produced action/disaster movie, shellshocked citizens reported Tuesday.

"Terrorist hijackings, buildings blowing up, thousands of people dying—these are all things I'm accustomed to seeing," said Dan Monahan, 32, who witnessed the fiery destruction of the Twin Towers firsthand from the window of his second-story apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn. "I've seen them all before—we all have—on TV and in movies. In movies like Armageddon, it seemed silly and escapist. But this, this doesn't have any scenes where Bruce Willis saves the planet and quips a one-liner as he blows the bad guy up."

"Did you hear that the plane that hit the Pentagon was supposed to crash into the White House?" Monahan continued. "It would have looked just like that scene in Independence Day. Only real."

Fellow New Yorker Bradley Martin, 25, was similarly shaken.

"This isn't supposed to happen in real life," Martin said. "This is supposed to be something that happens in the heads of guys in L.A. sitting around a table, trying to figure out where to add a love interest."

"I always thought terrorists blowing shit up would be cool," Martin continued. "Like, if the Pentagon was bombed, I figured they'd mobilize a special elite squadron of secret-agent ninjas, and half of them would be hot babes. How could I ever think that? This is actually happening, and it's just not cool at all."

For nearly two full weeks, Americans sat transfixed in front of their televisions, listening to shocked newscasters struggle to maintain their composure while describing events that would have been rejected by Hollywood producers as not believable enough for a Sylvester Stallone vehicle. All the familiar action-movie elements were there: terrorists taking over a plane, panicked crowds, huge fireball explosions, Secret Service agents ushering the president to a secret underground military base in Nebraska to plan the next move. A news report revealed that the terrorists had planned to strike Air Force One. At any moment, it seemed a squadron of alien warships would materialize and begin to menace Jeff Goldblum.

"I read that the plane that crashed near Pittsburgh didn't hit its target because the passengers fought back," said Modesto, CA, dental receptionist Sandra Barkum through tears. "I just kept thinking, that's what Wesley Snipes did in Passenger 57. Except, in the end, Wesley Snipes lived."

When the president finally appeared on TV, it was George W. Bush addressing the nation, not Bill Pullman or Harrison Ford. At the conclusion of his address, Bush did not grab a leggy blonde reporter out of the crowd and kiss her. When Americans finally staggered into the streets, desperate to talk to anyone to try to make sense of what they had just seen, there were no Attack On America collector cups waiting for them at Taco Bell. The dead and injured did not, like Jon Voight, stand up in their wheelchairs as the music swelled. And Ben Affleck was nowhere to be seen.

"There are Air Force jets flying over Manhattan and warships in New York harbor, but none of it is exciting or entertaining at all," said Wall Street broker Irwin Trotter, 47, among the lucky ones who walked away from the destruction. "If the world were going to suddenly turn into a movie without warning, I wish it would have been one of those boring, talky Merchant-Ivory ones instead. I hate those movies, but I sure wish we were living in one right now."

Despite a widespread call for military retaliation among the populace, the prospect of prolonged conflict offers little comfort.

"In the movies, when the president says, 'It's war,' that usually means the good part is just about to begin," said hardware-store owner Thom Garner of Cedar Rapids, IA. "Why doesn't it feel that way now? It doesn't feel like the good part is about to begin at all. It feels there's never going to be another good part again."

The collective sense of outrage, helplessness, and desperation felt by Americans is beyond comprehension. And it will be years before the full ramifications of the events of Sept. 11 become clear. But one thing is clear: No Austrian bodybuilder, gripping Uzis and striding shirtless through the debris, will save us and make it all better. Shocked and speechless, we are all still waiting for the end credits to roll. They aren't going to.

I'm not surprised. During the week after I imagined an entire motion picture about the WTC.

Story:
Guy falls in love with Girl. Guy works in Tower 1, Girl in Tower 2 right across from each other. Girl is dating someone, the Boss of the Guy. Etc, etc, etc. Shots of the courting, cute little signs like "I love you" in the window. Guy plans to propose to girl on 9/11. TRAGEDY HITS. Guy somehow meets with girl (I'm imaginging him kicking open his window and attaching a rope to swing to her window somehow, it's still in pre production, it can be worked on). Long story short, they say they love each other, rope is slowly breaking he sacrifices himself for her. She finds the engagement ring, realized he truly loves her. She looks up towards the sky, eyes filling with tears, fade to black, cue credits.

Of course there could be an additional hour made out of the war but this plot snyopsis was written pre-war.

And of course at least one of the pilots will be retiring right after that flight too. And one of the guys on the Pennsylvania flight will be a drug addicted lunatic, or maybe a prisoner being transported, but he has an epiphany realized the true meaning of life, and saves the day. Anyone want to bet that the movie will have a major plotline of one of the heroes being a devout muslim and realizing the true pacifism the religion preaches?

Don't forget all the colors of the ethnic rainbow being represented in every fashion. They'll be black, white, asian, mexican, all religions, handicapped, gay, fat, blah blah blah.

The subplot of those guys who took over the plane from the terrorists would be like the subplot of plane guys trying to save the Andrea Gail in A Perfect Storm but not as worthless (let's face it the plane scene where they try to rescue people, that was so fucking useless).

EDIT: And of course Muslims will be presented in a good light. What are they going to do? show them poorly?

No no then that would upset some people and we can't have that now can we. I mean wants more important, the security of our country and the people that live in it or the happiness of all these little Civil Rights dousche bags who should be dragged through the streets and stoned to death. I mean who cares if we make it easy for terrorist to carry out another attack on us (which is inevitable) as long as Civil Rights advocates are happy.

Was I the only one who thought it felt like a bad movie? Until I saw it myself I couldn't believe it. The TV made it so unreal.

Ditto Shelle. But even more than unreal, it was surreal.

As for Jerry Bruckheimer, F him! He's an action movie producer, pure and simple. Suddenly he starts churning out these asinine maudlin war "epics," and failing miserably with each one. How dare he? You need fine sensitive filmmakers behind these things, like maybe a David Lean, or even a Spielberg. I'm surprised Bruckheimer doesn't enlist James Cameron to pilot the vehicle (no pun intended). Then he could go about the normal Hollywood routine of conveniently changing and molding history around to fit its own distorted ass-backwards view. Why not just create another Titanic whereby some fictional young couple stuck in the towers fall in love before the structures collapse? Hell, he could even call the film "Towers."
