This story is worth noting because yesterday the FBI said terroists could strike today in the US or US interests overseas. The south wing of the Port Authority Bus Terminal was temporarily evacuated Tuesday morning after a man allegedly placed a suspicious device in front of a police desk at the terminal, police said. "One of the officers saw the man place it there," said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority Police Department. Police apprehended the man at about 8:15 a.m. and he "uttered something to the effect that it was a bomb." The south building of the terminal, which handles the majority of the morning rush hour traffic, was immediately evacuated, Coleman said. The north terminal was not affected. The New York City bomb squad responded to the scene and determined that the device was actually a cell phone with wires taped to it, Coleman said. The terminal was reopened to the public a few minutes after 9 a.m., Coleman said. During the closure, buses approaching the terminal were diverted and dropped off passengers on streets in the area around the terminal. Coleman said charges were pending against the man who allegedly placed the device. He said the man had yet to be identified. The terminal serves about 100,000 passengers and about 1,700 buses each weekday morning. Buses from New Jersey arrive at the terminal, which sits a block from Times Square, through the Lincoln Tunnel. After service was restored, announcements over loudspeakers at the terminal said there would be "significant delays" on all buses in and out of the terminal.  | ||||
