Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70	There's always the difference with the AAMPAS between who deserves to win and who will win. Russell Crowe is the new Tom Hanks and even though David Lynch deserves best director, Crowe will be for Ron Howard what Hanks was for Zemekis. I am also going out on a limb and even though I think 'Beautiful Mind' will win the oscar I am picking LOTR even though I feel 'Memento' is the only choice for best picture. As is will smith the choice for Oscar but the academy always goes for the mentally challanged (Rain Man, Forrest Gump, etc.) So Russell Crowe will win but then again from what I am hearing he does deserve it, I have no yet seen the film. Well let me add then, lol. The movie does have to be good too and from what I get 'I am sam' got horrible reviews and most of the past films have been up for best picture as well. Both Gump & Rain Man won that Oscar as well. Plus the Bills have a better chance of winning the SuperBowl than Penn has of getting that Oscar they always tease him with the nomination for films almost no one cares about or sees, yet everyone knows he has no shot. O&A Board Veteran Registered: Sep. 00	I too picked beautiful mind because it's a typical Oscar film. Great guy overcomes hardship with love, dramatic, makes you cry. Boom you're in Oscar land. Russell Crowe because he played said guy with brain deficiency who overcomes hardship. Why not Sean Penn because, as Gonzo said, IAS has gotten awful reviews and because they like to tease him. However, for director I think it might be a race between Scott and Jackson rather than Howard and becasue of the national feeling Scott might pull it off. As for best screenplay, it's going to be Gosford Park because it has British terms in it and it's a satire about class structure in early 20th century britain (which is always a great topic to satirize about 70 years after all the participants are dead) and it's supposed to be smart.
