How can you complain about an OTL banner when AOL trumps you with their endless ads everytime you log on?

It's been so long since I have seen an AOL screen that I didn't know that they implemented that. I think the last AOL version I saw was version 4.0. That was back when it was 19.99 /mo. and I only used them for the free month. After that they went up to 21.95. However, I did read that that they increased that to 23.90 /mo which is beyond fucked up. Say they have 40 million subscribers... they increased revenue by 80 million per month, by the last increase alone, for the shittiest psuedo-ISP out there. It's mindboggling to think that people still have AOL.

Pat, as far as your concerns go..

OTL, it's not just for breakfast anymore.

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

any chance of a new batch of OA.Com T-Shirts being printed up?

Sorry, I haven't given it any consideration. But I'd like to come up with a new design and have some printed, so maybe somewhere down the line.

I am busy working on the design/catch-phrase for the OTL T-Shirt.

How's this...

They've made it so you can "turn-off" the pop-ups, but they're still there, just not as overt. If you're a newbie to the internet (like my mom is, she wanted something easy) they don't tell you how to disable it - so every time you log on they hawk all kinds of shit on you. Sure, you can go into the Preferences and disable it, but then you need to disable the marketing shit (where they sell your name and address to more spammers) and then they STILL have links strewn about the Welcome page, any Keyword site, etc.

I think it was the movie Major League 2 or 3 where the team owner sold every square inch of the ballfield to advertisers? (someone help me out here) That's what AOL reminds me of.

They sell your REAL NAME & ADDRESS?

You have GOT to be kidding me!

People pay $23.90 per month for that?

ANYONE who has AOL gets what they deserve. It's not that hard to find a Dial-Up ISP for 15 - 20$ per month with no spam or advertising. And if you have cable/DSL and keep the AOL BYOA plan, you need a CAT SCAN.

I understand the older people needing something easy, but with a son like you that is really good with computers, you should give her a few simple lessons, and set her a homepage with the equivalent of most of the niceties that AOL provides. If mom is into cyber, in AOL chat rooms, have her IM me and talk dirty, I will make her apologize by virtually washing her mouth out with soap.

Thanks for the compliment :) Mom needs simple at first - once she gets the hang of the computer, let alone AOL, I'll be sure to get her off and put her on broadband. One thing at a time.

Listen, if you don't like OTL and you don't care, then just ignore the syndicated box as if it were a banner.

And PC, not to be picky, but your email address is an AOL email address - the KING of all banner ad spammers! How can you complain about an OTL banner when AOL trumps you with their endless ads everytime you log on?

Yes i use AOL. To be honest i'm not a computer geek and i really dont use it. Just for games and to post here and there. As for the ads on AOL. You can turn them the fuck off. Go to preferences.
