I'm planning on taking a trip in the near future... besides the hype we hear, has anyone has positive/negative experiences using these services?

Hmm... don't I know you? Heh.

I checked out Hotwire. I don't know if they've changed it since then, but when I looked, they don't tell you what airline you're flying, or the time of the flight until - get this - AFTER YOU HAVE PAID FOR IT. No refunds either. When you pay, you're locked in.

That's why they want you to be "flexible". Cause you won't know just how flexible you have to be till it's too late.

You? Know me? Not sure.

But doesn't Priceline do the same thing? You don't get times/carrier until you give over you CC # and you're lokced in?

At expedia you don't get to name your own price, but it does have pretty good deals.

I guess the difference is that with Priceline, you give over your info before bidding, right? Hotwire has a set price and lets you know what it is. I guess they both suck.

i just used hotwire for a hotel room in the city.
it worked really well... Times Square Hilton for 90 bucks before taxes. FTL is right they don't tell you what company but at least they give you the # of stars so you gotta figure its ok. I'm not sure how they do airlines but Hotwire was good for me.

I'm glad you bought this up

I have been checking out a trip to Arizona this week. These sites SUCKED. They advertise low prices and they just suck. They offer nothing. It's better to just stick with yahoo or a main place.

They make you put in your CC info and it just sucks. Hotwire/Travel Work/ Priceline all horrible.

We use Orbitz.com at work and I've used it for myself and got very good deals with it. It shows you different prices for different airlines and there is no CC info required unless you chose to buy.

How is Pluto this time of year?

j/k

I've always balked at using hotwire or priceline b/c it locks you in.

Jetblue.com is my suggestion for inexpensive trips, but uinfortunately, they don't go everywhere...but they are growing, cheap, comfortable, and very well-run...and fly out of JFK.

I've had good experiences with Hotwire.

In my case it was with hotels.

They don't give you the name of the hotel, however, with the information you input and the features that it lists before giving the actual name, I was able to figure out which of the participating hotels was being offered.

Turns out that I got the hotel I wanted for a ridiculously low price.

Southwest Airlines>All other airlines.

Its great they fly out of Islip Long Island. I can get to Providence, where i first went to college cheap from $40 one way.

Its the quickest way to get a free flight to anywhere in the country. I used mine to go to LA this January.

I have noticed that alot of these online services
for cheap airline tickets always screw you. If you get a really good price, you will more than likely have at least 1 stop over. You have to then get off the plane and get across the terminal to board the next connecting flight. Oh
don't worry, you want have to rush, cause usually you'll be in "Osh-Kosh" waiting for your flight for 2 hours. Sometimes it's not worth the savings.
In my experience your better off just going to Southwest or Jet Blue, which both have the best prices and offer online fare incentives........

And I heard the hotwire commercial saying why they were better than priceline.

Something about getting to know before you commit to purchasing or something. Not really sure.

I wasn't paying to close attention. I think that may be their new deal. Don't quote me on that.

In other words, I haven't really got a clue.

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

I have used Priceline for a couple of last minute, weekend trips to London and Arizona and did not have any problems.

I have found that expedia.com and travelocity.com are best for planning vacations. I have purchased airline tickets, car rentals and hotel reservations through both expedia and travelocity and I got great rates with no problems. :)

My cousin has used Priceline a few times. The more you use it, though, the "less gooder" the deals get. They begin to whore you out after awhile.

He also got screwed on some taxes and service charges. Yeah, he stayed at a five star hotel in New York for next to nothing, but pretty much everything else at the hotel (pool, etc) cost a lot more.

Which was really stupid to begin with, since he has family in New York that he could have stayed at! (Just wanted to be a big shot).

I think he did all right with the airfares, though.

I've used Expedia, Travelocity, and Lowestfare.com and have had good luck with all of them. Lowestfare just sucked with the hotel prices. but the airlne prices were good.[Sarcasm]It's amazing how you guys don't hold a grudge and let things go. [/Sarcasm]

Hotwire doesn't tell you what airline, but they do list which ones it can be. Hotwire you see what they offer, and have to commit quickly (I think within an hour). You can leave site and to to travelocity or expedia or orbitz after and see how good a deal they are offering. Hotwire you give up right to choose what time the flight is, and you cannot choose non-stop; you might get a non-stop, but it could be a one stop.

Go to smarterliving.com and sign up for their e-mail. All airlines run internet weekend specials, and Smarterliving will summarize the list and send it to you. If you are flexible and looking to go away for an extended weekend this is especially good.

Travelocity will let you keep track of fares, so that you know when they drop.

Always check a few sites before commiting; different sites could easily give different prices for same flight. If Jet Blue flies there, they are pretty good, and they are competitive - book at their site.

Lowestprice.com is a travel agency. They used to be owned by someone who was a onetime partner with TWA, and they were able to give discounted tix on TWA - I've used them without a problem. Now that TWA is part of AA, they may no longer get those discounted prices.

For hotels, try calling the hotel. I was thinking of going to Vegas for vacation and the hotel price that was given was actually cheaper than hotwire or those discount sites by like $100.
