The job market is in a tough spot for America and that is why I have to ask if anyone has even done the temp agency thing (obligatory: yes and was shot into space) and whether or not it's worth doing that or not.

Temp agencies are one step above welfare and one step below unemployment. It's for lazy people who don't want to work but who are not smart enough to take advantage of unemployment benefits.

Temping agencies are bullshit. I tried to get into one and they wouldnt let me get an assignment. Not to mention i hear they treat such workers like shit.

Its a good thing i got a real job after that.

IKEABOY - It all depends on what type of temp work you are looking for. I am guessing you are looking at it as a summer thing since you are still in college. If that is the case, you should have looked into an internship. This way you can learn and most likely get paid. The experience you gain will go a long way when it is time for you to enter the 'real world'. Internships can often turn into full time positions if you apply yourself.

That's a long story for a different time.

I am just looking for a summer thing and while I will look in the classified section of the newspapers, I was wondering if a temp thing might be easier.

Temp agencies are one thing only - a source of SOME money as you continue to look for a real job. You may get lucky and be placed in a position where you get a good few months at the same place - or you might get stuck doing one week at a SHITTY job where you basically do grunt work... once I got a week-long spot where I did was edit Word documents.... shading shit and making it bold or underlined. And the temp agency had the BALLS to get pissed at me when I found a different agency that, within ONE WEEK of calling them, found me a position that ended up going for 7 months (then I found a real job).

Click here if you're bored enough to email me.

I temped during high school and college (summers and breaks). Mostly answering phones and light typing. Easy work, decent money and air conditioning. It sucked if they only gave you an assignment for a couple of days, but I was lucky most of the time...usually had at least a month at a time.

you know, for a while there you were starting to grow on me.

i temped full time for about 2 years. my first job straight out of college i made 8.60 an hour, in fla where cost of living is way less than up here. when i moved up here i started at about $10/hour and after a few months i was making $15. almost every assignment i had was for 3 months or more, i ended all of them myself because i'd basically run out of work. a lot of them also offered me a permanent position. i did a wide variety of work ranging from clerical to tech support. the jobs and pay vary depending on your skills. i've gone through 3 or 4 agencies, the best being at temps, which isn't widely advertised but if you im me i'll give you their #. i think if you tell them you were referred by someone you might have a better chance. with a couple of the agencies it took 2 or 3 weeks before they found me something, but if you have good computer skills, especially word/excel/access experience (which you can basically teach yourself) they'll probably find you something pretty quick. so, don't listen to these guys, if what you're looking for is just a summer job, i'd say it's a good resource. the only downfall being that summer is the hardest time to get work, so try to get in there early before everyone else...in other words, hurry

THEY SUCK --- until they need you, you'll never get a call & most of the jobs suck anyway -- that's why they need temps for them
