OK everyone, I have a moral question to ask.
Look at the pic below. It's a new icon floating around out there. What does everyone think?
I am totally disgusted by it because someone thinks it's a joke, but on the other hand I am totally a supporter of free speach. I like things that stir peoples emotions up. But I think that this is sending the wrong message. I think the thing that may be bothering me about it is the forum. It's on a site that kids go to. I think that on another site it would be fine, but it's not.

Tell me what you think.

If anyone is gonna bomb a school because of a buddy icon, they don't deserve to live anyway. Calvin and Hobbes once ran a strip where Calvin fantasized about bombing his school. This is a strip that preteens and adolescents read. So if something as wholesome as a comic strip can portray this, why not an edgy icon site? Granted that was before the whole school shooting situation, but I see nothing wrong with it. There are plenty of "kill buddy" icons and so on that of course should not be imitated in real life. Remember, its just a joke.

Here's the stip:

Watterson's quote about it: "I got some nasty mail about this strip. Some readers thought it was inexcusable to show a kid fantasize about bombing his school off the face of the earth, Apparently some of my readers were never kids themselves"

Nuff said.

Maynard, you want to take the pulse of moral opinion here??

And for the record, that icon is in VERY poor taste.

What I can't stand if the over concern for kids today. Do you know what they're doing??? Everything you tell them not to do. There isn't even a free speech issue here. If it's a matter of bad taste? Than fine, it's in bad taste, but it's pretty fucking funny. It may be a tragedy to some, but it's a joke to others. (Homer: It's funny because I don't know them). It's rings true, I'm the most desensitised person you'd ever meet, I make jokes at funerals. But I cry in pet stores when I see puppies in cages.

Contrary to some people's beliefs, the Earth does not revolve around children. Remember I said that kids are just doing everything you tell them not to do? It's growing up with ultra-liberalism in parenting, meaning that we should be protecting children from everything we deem to be harmful, or potentially harmful. There isn't anymore finding out for yourself anymore. Whatever happened to skinning your knees on the playground? It doesn't happen anymore, I'm noticing more and more that playgrounds now have rubber padding on them? Instead of wood chips, instead of concrete? What the fuck? Of course they're never gonna know what getting hurt is like, I see elbow pads, knee pads helmets and shoulder pads for those little shits riding tricycles!!! NO MORE CENSORING!! NO MORE "SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN"!!! Give the kids some fucking credit and let them learn on their own. Let them know find out for themselves what is right and wrong, if they've been brought up right, they'll do fine, and they'll stop doing everything you tell them not to do. (sigh)

I think that icon is pretty goddamn funny. Bit it has nothing to do with morals. If people don't know that that icon is meant to be funny and NOT real, then that is there own fault. Someone makes a joke out of a serious situation and people automatically get all crazy. You know there are much worse icons floating around than this one. Bottom line, its a friggin joke people. Get over it.

You know what EAFofNY, I was reading your post and saying ok, valid point. Until you got to the part about learning things for themselves. So what you're saying is you want your kids to get blown up or shot at school so they or someone else, can learn the lesson that that is wrong?
Remind me not to send my kids to school with yours ass-f.

Alright, alright, no need to be nasty. Maybe I was getting off on a tangent, my point really didn't relate to the school bomb, just kids today in general and what I see. For you to say that I implied I want my kids to get blown up in school for them to learn the right/wrong less is kind of silly. Unless you honestly thought that was part of my point.

I don't have any kids yet.

I am offended by this statement. And I am not eff’in around. Are you eff’in joking?!?

The world DOES revolve around children or our future society. Everything we do is for the future. Think about it! Why do we recycle or create laws for a safer society? And who is going to be in charge of our society in 50 years!! Try to think on a more society level then within your own little world.

As far as the moral question posed by MaynardGKrebs, believe everybody on this board has a sense of humor and knows it’s a joke. The icon does not say, “Hey Try This”

I know I was laughing my ass off.

Ok everyone, let me restate this in another way.

What I have a problem with is all the news saying how sad and wrong this is, and parents telling the kids that it's wrong. Then they go to a place like Calvin & Hobbes or ballericons.com and see the stuff up there and they think it's ok. That it's just a joke.

Hey, ever hear that old statement "It won'y happen to me. Not in my town." And where are all the people that made that statement? Dead from AIDS or shot cause they think their town is safe and they dont have to lock their doors at night.

Don't be stupid people. Kids don't know right from wrong. They have impressionable minds and things like this confuse them more. 5 years ago, no big deal, but in light of recent events...not funny. No one was making jokes about your brother getting blown apart during the Vietnam war. Why do it now. It's still your brother/sister getting killed right?

MGK there is a huge difference between skinning your knee and shooting up a school. If a kid goes into a school and starts shooting up the place, then blames TV once he is caught, then all that boils down to is strictly bad parenting. Yeah the responsibility of a parent is to protect their kids I'll give you that. But alot of parents these days use television as a babysitter and as we all know to a small child TV can be very influential. Thats where the good parenting comes in. Not only is it the parents responsibility to protect their child, but it is also their responsibility to be by there kid's side letting them know the difference between real life and entertainment.

sarcasm Whos got morals anymore? sarcasm

It is a little harsh. I'm sure if I had children I would think differently on the subject. People get weird when it comes to children.

Just 2 days ago in Irvington NJ, an 8 year old boy was suspended for making a paper gun and pointing it towards another classmate. His parents have to go to court for this because the school has a no tolerance policy. I don't know about you folks but I always played "Cops and Robbers" and "Cowboys and Indians" when I was a youngin. I didn't shoot up my school.

I understand that you would find the icon in poor taste. But if you're gonna ban these types of jokes from society, then where are you going to draw the line. Is a joke less tasteful simply because of recent events? A joke is a joke, time doesn't make it any better or worse. If you don't like it, no one is forcing you to go the site. On the other hand, you cannot stop kids from going to sites like these. Unless you want America to turn into the Third Reich, its a lost cause.

ON that note, what I was trying to say was, we can't shield our kids from everything, can't protect them from the bad, and only let them see the good. It's one of those things, they're gonna find out anyway. There's always gonna be those sick fucks out there that don't live by society's rules, that's NEVER gonna change. Unfortunately they're getting younger and younger.

What I think is really the problem isn't the fact that someone created it. Like I said, I'm all for stirring people up. What I have a problem with is parenting. Parents don't tell their kids that these things are wrong. Yeah, maybe they say don't do that, but they need to put the fear of god into them. Parents have a child, then right away dump their kids into day care and let someone else raise them. That is wrong. And don't tell me that they need to work because of money. That they can't afford it, because no one said you have to have children. If you can't raise them the right way, don't have them.

Even though I found the icon disturbing, I can appreciate the humor. However, with two teenage kids in high scholl I laugh at other things that are more funny.

D -Dubya, it wasn't because of the item(paper gun). It was because of the words, "I'm going to kill all of you." An 8 year old can also pull a trigger.

Please don't turn this into an issue about religion. In most of the points you made Maynard I am in total agreement with you. But this has nothing to do with religion. This is the simple fact that parents these days dont know how to raise their kids. Period, Point Blank.

CORRECTION: The sky IS falling.

Mir Is Tops Among Fallen Satellites
By The Associated Press,
In the Space Age's 44 years, numerous spacecraft have fallen out of orbit, and a few re-entries have caused some concern. Among them:

Jan. 24, 1978: The crippled Russian satellite Cosmos 954 and its small nuclear reactor re-entered Earth's atmosphere and disintegrated, scattering debris over a wide area of remote northwest Canada.

July 1979: The 75-ton U.S. space station Skylab fell in a shower of red-hot fragments across western Australia.

Feb. 7, 1991: The 40-ton Russian space station Salyut-7, the Mir's predecessor, plunged through the atmosphere over Argentina. Pieces of the spacecraft, put into orbit in April 1982, fell on a sparsely populated area in the Andes mountains near the Chilean border. Five other Salyut space stations fell safely into the Pacific Ocean in a program that began on April 19, 1971.

Nov. 17, 1996: Shortly after launch, the Russian Mars 96 spacecraft, carrying four radioactive plutonium batteries, splashed into the South Pacific near Easter Island.

May 2, 2000: A metal ball fell from the sky on a farm 45 miles east of Cape Town, South Africa, leaving an 8-inch dent in the ground. The next day, another ball plummeted onto a farm in nearby Durbanville. NASA (news - web sites) scientists said the balls were debris from a Delta rocket launched in 1996.

If parents were really smart they would put their children's computers in a common area of the house instead of their children's bedrooms. This would make it easier to monitor what sites their children are on. Then the PARENTS can explain to the child that bombing your school and shooting your classmates is wrong. Maybe if their parents were paying closer attention, they could get their child some help before they resort to violence.

That is hilarious. Sure I have a dark sense of humor and joke about bombing/shooting up schools but I find that hysterical. That won't cause someone to blow up their school and if that's their excuse than for God's sake- let me off this planet.
