Anyone else felt cheated when Gladiator stole Best Picture? I mean it was relatively entertaining, but I defy anyone to convince me that it was a better film than Traffic or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. What a formulaic, predictable piece of garbage. I've seen the "Gladiator" plot a hundred times over in better movies: Villain kills man's family. Man takes revenge. Man is good at taking revenge. Man dies tragically, but not so tragic, as he can spend the rest of eternity with the family he lost and loved. Fucking yawn.

Why don't you dress the guy up in black, put a skull t-shirt on him and equip him with unlimited weaponry. (For all you Marvel buffs out there.)

Well, I'm peeved. Fuck it.

Well, I didn't watch 'em this year.. I have to admit, Crouching Tiger was my pick.. but I can't be too upset with Gladiator. I'll admit.. it's a formulaic story concept.. but truly, most stories today are based on a formuliac concept of some sort.. the trick's in the telling, so to speak.. and best picture isn't based on story alone.. it's an amalgam of which film best combines ALL the elements of storytelling, from plot, acting, and costuming and background imagery, straight through to photography and score... I personally think Gladiator fits the bill.. though not necessarily as well as some of the other films..
I also think the Oscars ARE a little too commercial nowadays.

Gladiator may have been formulaic to a degree, but I still thought it was a very well done. But CTHD was my pick too. Brilliant fucking film. Then again, I don't watch award shows.

You listen to me! While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is I am a nay-sayer and a hatchet man in the fight against violence! I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King! My concerns are global. I would have preferred Traffic to win as I didn't care for Gladiator. Ok movie, not great, not best picture.

Ellen Bursten should have won for best actress, RFAD was stunning.

Crowe, I don't know if he should have won for actor. I didn't think he was great but didn't care for Hanks though I heard Harris was magnificent.

Hudson should win.

Send Crystal a "Stay Home" Letter, invite Steve Martin back next year.

I agree Crouching Tiger and Ellen Burstyn got cheated. "Gladiator" was a good action movie but it was more of a summer blockbuster han a great film. Julia Roberts took an easy role as Erin Brokabitch as Burstyn challeneged herself in her role. F'n tools.

Who cares? I don't need those fuckers to validate my opinion on what I like and don't like. For what it's worth, IMHO, the best film of the year was either Requim For a Dream or The Girl On the Bridge, take your pick.

Award shows are big business crap. The only purpose they serve is to get ratings for the network and to validate the over-inflated egos of industry morons. Doesn't matter if its movies, music, TV, or whatever, the winners are picked on industry insiders twisted view of "what does the public want to see" not on what really deserves to win.

I just wish I had Bill Gates billions so I could make my own film company and buy a TV station and make the stuff that should be made. The stuff that gets bought and then shoved in a draw because the stuffed suits don't have the balls to take a risk and make it.

I thought I was the only person on the planet that didn't like Gladiator. What a boring piece of cheese. Even the fight scenes weren't that great. When Joaquim Phoenix said "This vexes me... I am vexed." I actually laughed out loud in the theater. Everyone looked at me like I had 2 heads. Crouching Tiger deserved the oscar but it didn't get it because it is a foreign film and because Miramax gave the Academy a lot of money. It is a business after all... very little of the voting has to do with the actual movie.

OK, for the record I thought Gladiator was boring and CTHD kicked ass, but the best films are the ones you'll never hear about because they're to far off the beaten track for wide release.

You F's have it all wrong! The movie that should have one Best Picture didn't even get nominated. I mean, this movie alone was a masterpiece of American Cinematography. The award should have gone to... "Dude, Where's My Car?". I am offended that the Academy didn't even consider this film for a nomination... Fuck those uptight bastards!

I have to say that Dude Where's my car was the only movie I saw in a theatre this year & I gave it two thumbs up!

As for Gladiator, I thought it was Braveheart with a more cliche'd ending. but I had to go with it since it was the only movie i saw that was nominated....

While i saw and enjoyed gladiator, i loved Crouching Tiger and Traffic...i think the movie of the year should have been Almost Famous...great flick, but thats just my opinion

I'm with you skitchr. Almost Famous was my favorite from last year. I also was really into High Fidelity, and Road Trip, but we all know that comedies don't get any recognition by the Ass F academy.

I take back what I said about comedies, that is if you consider Rainman and Forrest Gump to be comedies.

Its simple... Dreamworks (K.S.G.)= VOTES

Anytime these 3 men have a movie out forget about any other movie winning - voters love them...
